        Aeronautical engineering is the primary branch of engineering concerned with the research, design, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft and spacecraft. It is divided into two major and overlapping branches aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. The former deals with aircraft that operate in Earth's atmosphere, and the latter with spacecraft that operate outside it.
       Aerospace engineering deals with the design, construction, and study of the science behind the forces and physical properties of aircraft, rockets, flying craft and spacecraft. The field also covers their aerodynamic characteristics and behaviors, airfoil, control surfaces, lift, drag and other properties. This field deals with the development of new technology in the field of aviation, space exploration and defence systems.
        It specialises in the designing, construction, development, testing, operation and maintenance of both commercial and military aircraft, spacecrafts and their components as well as satellites and missiles. As Aerospace engineering involves design and manufacture of very high technology systems. It specializes in different areas like aerodynamics, celestial mechanics, thermodynamics, control systems and propulsion. The engineering colleges in India offer courses in aeronautics both at postgraduate and undergraduate level.
        Aerospace Engineering being intrinsically a multidisciplinary activity, the research interests of the faculty cover a broad range from basic fluid mechanics to avionics. Some of the topics of current interest are Computational Mechanics including CFD, Combustion and Structural Mechanics Experimental Aerodynamics ranging from low speed flows to hypersonic flows Fuel Injection Systems and Spray Formation, Advanced Propulsion Systems Flight Vehicle Dynamics Advanced Control and Guidance of Aerospace Vehicles (such as aircrafts, unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, missiles, launch vehicles and satellites) Structural Health Monitoring Smart Structures; Aeroelasticity etc. Most of these research topics are of direct relevance to the aerospace industry.
        Aerospace Engineering deals with design and development of aircrafts, launch vehicles, and spacecrafts. Four broad sub-disciplines under Aerospace Engineering are     (a) Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics,
        (b) Thermal and Propulsion,
        (c) Design and Structures
        (d) Materials and Manufacturing.
        Engineering education is incomplete without exposure to real life phenomena and without developing the ability to experimentally investigate the performance of actual systems.
    Core companies
        Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, there are few private companies like Boeing, GE who offer job for aerospace engineering.
    Scope of Aeronautical Engineering
        Aeronautical engineering is one of the career-oriented branches of engineering that deals with the construction, functioning, manufacturing, maintenance, testing, and design of aircrafts and spacecraft. It is one of the most challenging, but rewarding field in engineering.
        Some popular areas of work in the field include flight testing, engine design, fuel efficiency testing, investigating aircraft crashes, analysis of environmental impacts of flight and interpreting the performance data of aircrafts. These engineers are in great demand in Air force, Navy, Army, commercial aviation companies, space research agencies, civil aviation, industrial, government and academic research centers. Indian Air Force offers job opportunity in ground duty, technical, logistics and flying departments as flight controller or Air Traffic Controllers (ATC). Various other job titles in different sectors include technical officer, commercial pilot, system engineer, and aircraft maintenance engineer.
