  • Right Attitude Leads to Success!

         HR interview is a crucial one as it draws a thin line that makes an aspirant an employed or unemployed. This stage happens to be the final stage to get an offer letter. The performance of the candidate becomes highly crucial and vital as the dreams can be turned into a reality. As the candidate clears the written test, technical round, group discussion or a presentation,

     

    facing the HR round definitely creates anxiety and restlessness in the aspirant.

    TIPS

    • 1) One should neither feel anxious nor over confident. Balanced mind with required confidence, positive thinking, meticulous planning, careful preparation, and a right attitude will surely make the aspirant a winner.
    • 2) Carrying an updated Resume with necessary documents is a must.
    • 3) First impression is the Best impression, - Hence appearance, attire, pleasing behavior, apt use of explanatory gestures,  eye contact,  good pronunciation, clarity in expressions, accurate answers should differentiate the winner from other candidates.

    Some expected and tricky questions:
     Human Resources (HR) interview mainly focuses on the candidate’s communication skills, analytical ability, aptitude, confidence, organizational suitability. The questions reflect the existing job market, understanding capability and analyzing capacity.

    • How long can you commit to work with us?

    The aspirants tend to reply as if they are bound to work for  a life time or frank and disclose their plan to fly and do further studies, or shift to some other organization after gaining 2-3 years of experience. Instead, focus on new challenges and express the pleasure of working in an organization that shows progress and valuing professional relationship. The interviewer should get the feeling that the aspirants are looking forward to working for useful, interesting and productive work with individual growth and progress.

    • What is your expected salary?

    Generally, the candidate answers in specific figures and gives a direct hint of working for any amount offered or  not coming down from the expected figure. It is always advisable to take a neutral stand and hint the employer that an ideal package is expected that distinguishes the performance, aptitude, potentiality, capacity and hard work.

    • Describe your life as a “news headline”.

    Don’t get confused with the framing of the question. Indeed it hints about ‘Telling something about the aspirant’. Mostly students talk about their school, college days, and family members and leave it. The purpose of this question is to find out communication and technical skills, educational credentials, strengths that distinguish from other aspirants, career goals and future plans. The reply should make the aspirant different from others.

    • Do you consider yourself a suitable candidate for this position?

    The aspirant should be confident and based on the positions that would be offered, one should gather inputs on the skills and requirements needed. The domain knowledge should be reflected while replying.

    • What do you know about us?

    This needs some research about the organization - important milestones, persons responsible, professional advancements, thriving technologies and future prospects.

    • Tell us some of your strengths.

    Identify the strengths like goal setting, time management, positive thinking and technical skills that reflect your position in that organization. You can speak about role models, inspirational personalities, their qualities that brought a change in you at personal and academic levels.

    • Tell us some of your weaknesses.

    A weakness should add to ones resume and reflect in a positive manner. Probably networking with similar skilled persons, meeting the deadlines, restlessness if the task is incomplete etc. can be an answer.

    • What motivates you?

    Talk about influencing people, interests, challenging efforts, innovative ideas, creative thoughts that make you think differently.

    • Can you work for longer hours?

    The aspirant should not hint that he/she cannot work for longer hours or ready to work always. Express the interviewer that as per the demands of the situation, work, needy conditions, you are available.

    • Discuss the most stressful situation you came across.

    This question focuses on emotional balance. Don’t say that you have never faced any stressful situation. Identify one – examinations, peer pressure and discuss how you overcame it.

    • Why should we hire you?
    • Talk about the skills that separate you from other candidates. Your strengths, achievements, aims and objectives, technical competence, clarity in thoughts should make the interviewer grab you into his/her company.
    • Are you willing to relocate/travel?

    Aspirants have issues related to missing family members, adjustment with new environment, change of place and  hence respond negatively. The answer should be always ‘yes’ and one should not create personal boundaries in the age of globalization.

    • Do you prefer working in a team or individually?

    You should be capable of working under both conditions - individually taking independent decisions, as well as working in a team that displays coordination, and group work.

    • Tell us something about your hobbies/interests

    Your hobbies should also arise interest in the interviewer –collection of stamps , coins,  gardening, sports, music, reading, charity work. Your hobbies reflect your personality.

    • Where do you see yourself after 5 years?

    Don’t give the hint that you might fly for further studies or look for another company. Try to make a long term commitment and impress the interviewer by aiming at excellence like promotions, increments, appraisals etc.

    • If you win 10 million dollars, will you leave the job?

    One of the students replied that 10 millions could be spent easily as money is not permanent. He added that if he continued working in the organization, 10 millions might become 100 millions as the job atmosphere teaches a person to become a decisive thinker.

    If you are in a position to offer a seat in your car (only one seat is available)  - to an old women who needs emergency hospital visit, an old friend who saved your life earlier and  a beautiful lady who has all the qualities to become your wife, who would you allow to travel along with you?

    One of the students replied that he would leave the car and give the keys to his best friend and request him to take the old women to a hospital on his way and he would stay back and try to impress the girl.

    • Tell something negative you have heard about your college?

    This question is to trap the aspirant. Negative remarks should never be passed either on the college, or on the people. Try to be positive.

    • Do you have any questions for us?

    Don’t talk about salary, incentives, holidays, permissions etc. rather grab information about work culture, academic learning, your role if selected.

    Conclusion

    Any interview is a learning experience, if selected share your experiences with others and support them to be successful and if rejected, get feedback, act on it and learn from the mistakes committed and be ready to face the next challenge.
