C.B. Ananthakrishnan assumes charge as Director (Fin) of HAL
State-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd informed that C.B. Ananthakrishnan has assumed charge as Director (Finance) of the company. Prior to this, he was the Executive Director (Finance) at HAL Corporate Offic.
he joined HAL in March 2004 as Chief Manager (Finance) at Helicopter Division, Bengaluru.
Pointing out that Ananthakrishnan was also HAL nominee Director in the Board of three joint ventures of HAL, he played an active role in HAL's Initial Public Offer (IPO) during March 2018.

Deepak Parekh re-appointed as Non-Executive Director on the board of HDFC
Deepak Parekh was re-appointed as a Non-Executive Director on the board of the country's largest mortgage lender HDFC but nearly 23 per cent of the shareholders voted against his continuation.
Results of the voting at the company's annual general meeting held showed that 22.64 per cent of the shareholders were not in favour of the continuation of Parekh.
As many as 77.36 per cent of the shareholders voted for Parekh's continuation as a Non-Executive Director, according to the voting results submitted by HDFC to the stock exchanges.

IIFL Mutual Fund appoints Anup Maheshwari as joint CEO and CIO
IIFL MF announced the appointment of Anup Maheshwari, ex-chief investment officer of DSP Blackrock MF, as the joint CEO and chief investment officer (CIO) with effect from mid-August 2018. Business Standard had earlier reported that the IIFL group was one of the options that Maheshwari was evaluating.
After spending close to two decades at DSP Blackrock MF in different roles, Maheshwari resigned from his position as CIO-equities in April.
At IIFL AMC, Maheshwari will be responsible for the investment and strategy for both the mutual funds and alternative investment funds businesses.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Y.C. Deveshwar appointed non-official directors in Air India
Renowned industrialists Kumar Mangalam Birla and Y.C. Deveshwar were appointed as non-official independent directors in Air India.
It is perhaps for the first time that big industrialists like them have been named on the board of a public sector enterprise.
Birla heads the $44.3 billion multinational Aditya Birla Group, which operates in 35 countries across six continents.
Deveshwar is the chairman of ITC, a Kolkata-based company having diversified business in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector and hotels among others.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the appointment of Birla and Deveshwar as non-official independent directors in Air India for a period of three years.

India's envoy to Ireland Vijay Thakur Singh appointed secy (East) in MEA
India's envoy to Ireland Vijay Thakur Singh was named secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, according to an official order. Singh is a 1985 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service.
She will take over as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) with effect from September 15.
Singh, currently Ambassador in Dublin, will take over as secretary (East), MEA, with effect from October 1 on superannuation of Preeti Saran on September 30.

Anurag Sachan appointed MD, DFCCIL
Anurag Sachan was appointed as Managing Director of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCIL), according to an official order.
Sachan, a 1981-batch officer of Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), is at present Chief Administrative Officer of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project.
DFCCIL is a special purpose vehicle set up under the administrative control of the Ministry of Railways to undertake planning and development, mobilisation of financial resources and construction, maintenance and operation of the dedicated freight corridors.

India elected president of asia pacific institute for broadcasting development
The Asia-Pacific Institute of Broadcasting Development (AIBD) elected Fayyaz Sheheryar, Director-General of All India Radio, as its new President. This is the first time India has been elected for the position of president of AIBD.
Established in 1977 under the auspices of UNESCO, AIBD is a unique regional inter-governmental organisation servicing countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) in the field of electronic media development. The elections were held at the 44th annual meeting of AIBD in Colombo.

Three high court judges appointed as Supreme Court justices
Three high court judges were appointed to the Supreme Court, taking the total number of judges in the apex court to 25.
Notifications announcing the appointments of Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice K.M. Joseph, Madras HC Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Orissa HC Chief Justice Vineet Saran to the Supreme Court were issued.

Re-elected Zimbabwe president Emmerson Mnangagwa appeals for unity
75-year-old Mnangagwa, of the ruling ZANU-PF party, won 50.8 per cent against Nelson Chamisa, of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance.
He has been in power since November 2017. Earlier he was the Vice-President and is called ‘the crocodile’.
ZANU-PF, which has ruled the southern African country since independence in 1980.

S. Gopakumar joins United India Insurance as Director & GM
Public sector non-life insurance firm United India Insurance Company announced the appointment of S. Gopakumar as its Director and General Manager with immediate effect.
Prior to taking up the new role, Gopakumar was serving GIC Housing Finance Ltd as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Gopakumar began his career with public sector National Insurance Company and has held various responsibilities in his more than three decade experience.

Aditya Vikram and Pramod Chandra Mody appointed CBDT members
The Centre has appointed two new members in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy-making body of the Income Tax Department.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Aditya Vikram and Pramod Chandra Mody as the CBDT members, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Vikram, a 1981-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), is the principal director general (logistics) in Delhi. Mody, who belongs to the 1982 batch of the service, is the principal chief commissioner, Mumbai.
The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of six members. Its chief, Sushil Chandra, will be in office till May 31 next year.

Ivan Duque sworn in as Colombia’s youngest 60th President
Colombia's President-elect Ivan Duque has been sworn in as the country's 60th president, amid concern over the influence he will have on the country's peace process.
More than 12,000 police were deployed in the historic centre of the capital Bogota for Duque's inauguration.
UN ambassador Nikki Haley is also expected to lead a US delegation to Duque's swearing-in.

S. Gurumurthy & Satish Marathe appointed part-time Directors on RBI board by CAC
The Centre has appointed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliate Swadeshi Jagaran Manch co-convenor Swaminathan Gurumurthy and businessman Satish Kashinath Marathe to the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The names were approved as per provisions of Section 8 1C of the RBI Act, 1934 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
They have been appointed as a part-time, non-official director for the period of four-year. With the two new appointments, the total number of government-appointed directors on the RBI board has reached 10.

Rekha Sharma appointed chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW)
NCW member Rekha Sharma, who recently stoked a controversy by suggesting abolition of confessions in churches, has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women.
Sharma, 54, was earlier a member of the Commission and was holding the additional charge of chairperson after Lalitha Kumaramangalam demitted office in September last year. She belongs to Haryana
As a member of the Commission, she visited and inspected a number of psychiatric institutions, custodial homes throughout the country and interacted with women admitted in these institutions.

R.S. Sharma re-appointed TRAI chairperson till 2020
Ram Sewak Sharma was given two-year extension as the chief of the telecom regulator TRAI, according to an official order.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved reappointment of Sharma as chairperson of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for a further period beyond August 10, 2018 upto September 30, 2020, i.e. the date on which he attains the age of 65 years.
He was in July 2015 named as the TRAI chief for a three-year period. Sharma has earlier worked in various government departments particularly dealing with IT-enabled programmes. He has also worked as Director General and Mission Director of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) or Aadhaar.

Dr. R.G. Anand appointed Member, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
The Government of India has appointed Dr. R.G. Anand as Member, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights with effect from 2018 for a period of three years, or until on attaining the age of 60 years, or until further orders, wherever is the earlier.

NDA candidate Harivansh elected as Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha
NDA candidate and JD(U) MP Harivansh was elected the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, defeating Opposition candidate and Congress MP B.K. Hariprasad.
The final tally of votes showed 125 for Mr. Harivansh and 101 for Mr. Hariprasad. Four Congress MPs had polled their vote twice. They had sent in paper ballots, thinking that their votes had not been electronically recorded.
This is the first significant victory scored by the ruling NDA in the Rajya Sabha, where the Opposition is in majority, and could pave the way for an assertive BJP. With 73 MPs, the BJP is now the largest party in the House.

Rajendra Menon sworn in as Chief Justice of Delhi HC
Justice Rajendra Menon was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court by Lt Governor Anil Baijal at a ceremony held at the Raj Niwas in New Delhi.
Justice Menon, who was earlier the Chief Justice of Patna High Court, succeeds Justice Gita Mittal, who was elevated to head the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

Gita Mittal becomes first woman Chief Justice of J&K High Court
Justice Gita Mittal became the first-ever woman Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court after she was administered the oath of office by Governor N.N. Vohra.
The Governor administered the oath of office to Justice Mittal as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court at an impressive ceremony at the Raj Bhavan.

Aniruddha Bose takes oath as CJ of Jharkhand HC
Justice Aniruddha Bose took oath as the new Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.
He was administered oath by Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu at the Raj Bhavan.
Enrolled with the Bar Council of West Bengal as an advocate in 1985, he practised in the Calcutta High Court and was elevated to the Bench in 2004.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das, former Chief Ministers Arjun Munda and Hemant Soren, Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Dinesh Oraon and a host of dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Justice M.R. Shah sworn in as Chief Justice of Patna HC
Justice Mukesh R. Shah was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court. Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik administered the oath of office to Justice Shah at the Raj Bhavan.
Justice Shah was a judge of the Gujarat High Court before his appointment as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court.
Justice Shah enrolled as an advocate of the Gujarat High Court in 1982. He became a judge of the Gujarat High Court on March 7, 2004 and was confirmed as permanent judge on June 22, 2005.

Justice Vijaya Tahilramani sworn in as Madras High Court Chief Justice
Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
The Governor administered the oath of office to the new Chief Justice at a ceremony in the Raj Bhavan.
Justice Tahilramani, who was the acting chief justice of the Bombay High Court, was recently appointed Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, succeeding Justice Indira Banerjee, who has been elevated to the Supreme Court.
Justice Tahilramani is the third woman chief justice of the Madras High Court.

Justice Kalpesh Satyendra Jhaveri was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.

Justice Jhaveri was appointed to the post following the elevation of Justice Vineet Saran as a Supreme Court judge along with Justice K.M. Joseph and Justice Indira Banerjee.

Justice Manjula Chellur takes oath as APTEL Chairperson
Justice Manjula Chellur took oath as Chairperson of Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL).Prior to this; Justice Chellur was Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
She was the first woman Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. Justice chellur also served as the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and the first female judge of the Karnataka High Court. She demitted her office as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court upon attaining the age of superannuation on December 4, 2017.

AIFF senior vice president Subrata Dutta elected as vice president of SWAFF
All India Football Federation senior vice president Subrata Dutta was elected as a vice president of the newly formed South West Asian Football Federation during its General Assembly in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Dutta was elected for a four-year term in the polls of the regional football body.

Ashish Kumar Bhutani appointed CEO of PM crop insurance scheme
Senior bureaucrat Ashish Kumar Bhutani has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
Bhutani, a 1992 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, has been appointed to the post till May 9, 2020. Launched in 2016, the PMFBY is in line with one nation one scheme theme.

Canara Bank, Bank of India non-executive chairmen get extension
The Centre extended the terms of non-executive chairmen of Canara and Bank of India for two years.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved renomination of Thothala Narayanasamy Manoharan as part-time non-official director on the board of Canara Bank for two years with effect from tomorrow.
The ACC has also extended his term as the non-executive chairman of the bank's board for the same period.
Similarly, Gopalaraman Padmanabhan has been renominated as part-time non-official director on the board of Bank of India for two years.
His term as the non-executive chairman of Bank of India has also been extended for the period.

Ramesh Powar appointed as Head Coach of India Women’s Cricket team
The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Ramesh Powar as the Head Coach of Indian Women’s Team. Powar, who was asked to manage the team after the resignation of former coach Tushar Arothe, was handed the full handed over the full-time duties till November 30, 2018.
The former right-arm spinner will lead the team as the coach for India’s upcoming tours to Sri Lanka, a bilateral series in West Indies, followed by ICC Women’s World T20 in West Indies.
Powar is the third individual to take the role in the past one and a half year. Prior to Arothe, the post was held by Purnima Rau, who was removed just a few months ahead of the Women’s World Cup in 2017.

N. Raghuram elected Chair of International Nitrogen Initiative
Indian scientist-academician, N. Raghuram, has been elected Chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI).
A professor at the GGS Indraprastha University, New Delhi, Raghuram is the first Indian and Asian to be elected to the Chair. He will succeed Mark Sutton of the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Edinburgh.
The Vice-Chair elect is David Kanter of the New York University, an expert in the role of nitrous oxide and nitrogen policy evaluation. He recently led the nitrogen side event at the 2018 meeting of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The position has been created recently.

Imtaiyazur Rahman takes over as interim CEO of UTI MF
UTI Mutual Fund has appointed its senior-most official Imtaiyazur Rahman as the acting chief executive officer after Leo Puri stepped down as MD and CEO.
Puri quit as managing director and CEO of UTI Mutual Fund after the end of his five-year tenure as board room battle between Indian and foreign shareholders cast shadow over his extension.
Rahman will look after the day to day operations of the company, working closely with the rest of the senior leadership team.

D. Bala Venkatesh Varma appointed Ambassador to Russia
Senior diplomat D. Bala Venkatesh Varma was appointed as India's next ambassador to Russia, considered a high-profile posting due to expanse of strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Varma, a 1988 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as Indian envoy in Spain.He will succeed Pankaj Saran who has been appointed deputy National Security Advisor.
Saran has been India's envoy to Russia since January 2016.

A.K. Singh takes charge as Director-Pipeline of Indian Oil Corporation
Akshay Kumar Singh has joined as Director (Pipelines) of state-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the country's biggest firm.
Singh, 57, previously was Executive Director in state gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd.
He will be in charge of IOC's 13,400-km network of crude oil, petroleum product and gas pipelines with a throughput capacity of 94.79 MTPA of oil and 9.5 million metric standard cubic metres per day of gas.
A mechanical engineer from MIT, Muzaffarpur and a post graduate in Turbo Machinery from South Gujarat University, Singh has about 32 years of experience in the petroleum and natural gas sector.

K.S. Srinivas takes over as MPEDA chief
IAS officer K.S. Srinivas has taken over as the Chairman of the city-based Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), an agency under the Union Commerce Ministry.
Prior to his new assignment, he had served as Joint Secretary in the Department of Agriculture Cooperation and Farmers' Welfare in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Anandiben Patel takes oath as Governor of Chhattisgarh
Madhya Pardesh Governor Anandiben Patel, who has been given the additional charge of Chhattisgarh following the death of Governor Balramji Dass Tandon, was sworn in at a ceremony. Chhattisgarh High Court Chief Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi administered the oath of office to Patel during a simple function at the Raj Bhawan.
President Ram Nath Kovind gave Patel the additional charge of Chhattisgarh following the demise of Tandon. Patel will discharge the additional duties until regular arrangements for the office of the governor of Chhattisgarh are made.

Mario Abdo Benitez sworn in as the 50th President of Paraguay
Mario Abdo Benitez took office as Paraguay's new president; the 46-year-old conservative took the oath of office at a ceremony in the capital Asuncion, attended by hundreds of dignitaries including seven heads of state.
He pledged to work with the opposition to push through reforms, but will also have to overcome divisions within his own Colorado ruling party a rift so deep that outgoing president Horacio Cartes skipped the ceremony.

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita wins re-election as president
Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been re-elected as president after beating opposition candidate, Soumaila Cisse, in a runoff vote.
The Ministry of Territorial Administration declared Keita the winner of the repeat poll with 67 percent of ballots cast.
Cisse, a former finance minister, who also ran against Keita in 2013, secured 32 percent of the votes.Keita will serve his second five-year term as Malian leader.

Subhash Sheoratan Mundra has been appointed as Independent Director on the Board of Indiabulls Housing Finance for a period of three years, effective August 18 onwards. The former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and senior banker is not replacing an existing member on the Board.
Mundra, a Post-Graduate from the University of Poona, used to be the Chairman of Bank of Baroda and an Executive Director at Union Bank of India. He left the RBI in July 2017.

Ex-HC judge Sharma named head of C'garh anti-graft authority
Retired judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court T.P. Sharma was appointed the new chief Lokayukt of the state.
Sharma will head the Chhattisgarh Lok Ayog, set up to deal with corruption cases against public servants.
A notification regarding the appointment of Sharma by the Governor was issued by the General Administration Department.

Satya Pal Malik is new Jammu-Kashmir Governor, replaces N.N. Vohra
Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the new governor of Jammu and Kashmir. The appointment was approved by President Ram Nath Kovind. Lal ji Tandon will replace Malik as the Bihar Governor.
Among other changes, the President appointed Satyadev Narayan Arya as the Governor of Haryana and Baby Rani Maurya as the Governor of Uttarakhand. Ganga Prasad, the Governor of Meghalaya, has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Sikkim.
Tathagata Roy, the Governor of Tripura, has been given charge of Meghalaya, while Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki has been appointed as Governor of Tripura.

Arun Jaitley re-appointed as Finance Minister three months after kidney transplant
Arun Jaitley, who stepped aside as Finance Minister in mid-May to undergo a kidney transplant, was reappointed as Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs.
Jaitley, 65, stopped attending office at the beginning of April, and will be back in North Block - the seat of Finance Ministry.
Jaitley had undergone a renal transplant operation. On that day, the charge of his ministry was given to Minister for Railways and Coal Piyush Goyal on an interim basis.

Vedanta plea: NGT appoints ex-judge Justice S.J. Vazifdar as chairman of panel
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has appointed former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice S.J. Vazifdar as head of a three-member committee to decide mining company Vedanta’s plea challenging closure of its Sterlite copper plant at Tuticorin.
It had noted in its order that it cannot be ignored that the copper smelting plant contributed to copper production in the country and employed 1,300 people.

KKR's ex-director Kabir Mathur joins ADIA to head India investments
Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), the world’s second largest sovereign wealth fund, has hired private equity veteran Kabir Mathur to head operations in India.
Mathur, a former director with US fund KKR & Co. L.P, has joined with ADIA's Abu Dhabi office as Head- India & South East Asia, Private Equities.
Mathur, director of Private Equity at KKR, associated with the firm during 2008 -2017 and focused on KKR's investing and portfolio management activities across Southeast Asia. Prior to joining KKR, he worked with TPG Capital as Associate, focused on the investment activities in Southeast Asia.

Anil Kumar Pathak takes over as Member (Planning) at BIZ-BRIEFS
Anil kumar Pathak has taken over as Member (Planning) at the Airports Authority of India (AAI),Pathak took charge on August 21.
Prior to this posting, he had served as Executive Director of Planning as well as Engineering at the headquarters.He was also associated with Corporate Planning, Traffic Forecasting, and Airport Infrastructure Planning.
Pathak has a Masters Degree in Environment Science and Engineering.

Rajput appointed head coach of Zimbabwe cricket team
Former India opener Lalchand Rajput has been appointed as the head coach of Zimbabwe’s national team.Zimbabwe Cricket made the announcement on their official Twitter handle.
Rajput was earlier appointed as the interim head coach of Zimbabwe for the tri-series involving Pakistan and Zimbabwe and for the ODI rubber against Pakistan.

Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy appointed Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO
The Government appointed eminent scientist Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy as the Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The top post of the DRDO had been vacant. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri to the post of Secretary, Department of Defence Research & development and Chairman, DRDO for a period of two years with effect from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
A missile scientist, Dr. Reddy was holding charge as the Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister and also as Director General of the strategic missiles division.

Indiabulls Ventures appoints ex-NPCI MD Abhaya Hota as Independent Director
Indiabulls Ventures has appointed Abhaya Prasad Hota, former managing director at the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), as an independent director on the board for a period of three years.

Satya Tripathi appointed Assistant Secretary-General & Head of New York Office of UNEP
UN Secretary General António Guterres has appointed veteran Indian development economist and UN official Satya S Tripathi as Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Tripathi, who will succeed Elliott Harris of Trinidad and Tobago, has since 2017 served as Senior Adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at UNEP.
A development economist and lawyer with over 35 years of experience, Tripathi has worked for the United Nations since 1998 in Europe, Asia and Africa on strategic assignments in sustainable development, human rights, democratic governance and legal affairs.

ICICI Bank votes for Kochhar's reappointment to ICICI Securities board
The Kishinchand Chellaram College, usually bustling with students, resembled a heavily-guarded fort ahead of the annual general meeting (AGM) of ICICI Securities. Shareholders were to decide whether Chanda Kochhar should continue to serve on the board of the broking and investment banking firm.
Chairperson of ICICI Securities, Kochhar - currently on leave amid an on-going probe in the Videocon loan case - gave the AGM a miss but her position remained intact.
According to the voting pattern shared on the exchanges, 95.78 per cent of the shareholders’ votes were in favour of Kochhar’s reappointment.
All the promoter and promoter group shareholders voted for her reappointment, while only 2.27 per cent votes were against it.

IBA elects PNB's Sunil Mehta as chairman
The Indian Banks Association (IBA) has elected Punjab National Bank's managing director and chief executive, Sunil Mehta, as the new chairman for 2018-19.
The managing committee of the banking lobby has also elected Bank of India's managing director and chief executive, Dina Bandhu Mohapatra.
State Bank of India's chairman, Rajnish Kumar, and Federal Bank's managing director, Shyam Srinivasan, will continue as deputy chairmen of IBA.
Madhav Nair, country head and chief executive, Mashreqbank PSC, has been elected as the Honorary Secretary of the association for 2018-19.
