February 1

Vice Admiral MS Pawar, AVSM, VSM Assumes Charge as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS)
An alumnus of Sainik School Korukonda and the 60th course of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune, he was commissioned on 01 July 1982.
During the ab initio training he was adjudged ‘Best all round Cadet’ and also stood first overall in the year long Sub Lieutenant Technical Courses.
The Admiral has held various challenging Staff and Command assignments during his distinguished naval career and has had wide ranging experience of over 25 years in sea going billets onboard diverse platforms ranging from small ships to aircraft carrier.

Punit Goenka named new BARC India chairman
Goenka will take over from Nakul Chopra, who has completed his year-long tenure as chairman of the joint industry body
Goenka was the founder chairman of BARC India
Punit Goenka, managing director and CEO, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd has been elected the new chairman of TV viewership measurement company, BARC India.
LT Gen Rajeev Chopra takes over as DG NCC
Lt Gen Chopra is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
Lt Gen Rajeev Chopra has commanded an infantry battalion in Operation Rhino (Assam). He has commanded a Brigade in Eastern Command and was inspector General of HQ IGAR (South) in the insurgency-torn state of Manipur.  The General Officer commanded a Corps in Eastern Theatre and has also been the Commandant of the prestigious Infantry School. He is also the Colonel of The Madras Regiment since Jun 2016.
Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P Assumes Charge as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command
He succeeds Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC who retires upon superannuation, after an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades in the Indian Navy.
The Admiral has served extensively in the Western Naval Command in the initial specialist and Command appointments. He has also been the Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of the Western Naval Command.
In recognition of his service, he has been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2006, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2014 and Param Vishist Seva Medal in 2019 by the Hon’ble President of India.
EU countries recognize Juan Guaido as 10th interim Venezuelan president
In a coordinated move made after a deadline for Nicolas Maduro to call presidential elections expired.
Juan Guaido is a Venezuelan engineer and politician serving.
Dilip Sadarangani is chairman of Federal Bank
He has played key roles in setting up of IT infra structure in different banks in India, Kuwait and Australia.
He is also core member of the team which automated the first 50 branches of state bank of India.
Gupteshwar Pandey appointed new Bihar DGP.
Pandey, a1987 batch Bihar cadre IPS officer, took charge as 51st director general of police (DSP) of Bihar.
He succeeds K.S. Dwivedi.
Pandey is the first DGP of the state to be chosen by a new process in which eligible names are shortlisted by a UPSC board and sent to the state for final appointment.

February 2

Sanjiv Ranjan appointed as the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Colombia.
Ranjan, who is the current Ambassador to Argentina, is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
Ranjan who is a 1993 batch Indian Foreign Service officer holds bachelors in Economics from Delhi University and an M.A. in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The 1966-born IFS officer had served as Deputy High Commissioner of India to Mauritius from 2006 to 2009.

Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar takes charge as Vice Chief of Naval Staff.
An alumnus of Sainik School, Amravati Nagar and National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Pune, he was commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy on 01 Jul 1982.
He served as the Navigating Officer of Indian Naval Ships (INS) Beas, Nilgiri, Ranvir and Vikrant.

February 3

Former Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police Rishi Kumar Shukla, a 1983-batch officer, has been appointed the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The 58-year-old officer from Gwalior is at present the chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Police Housing Corporation.
The post of the CBI chief had been vacant since the unceremonious exit of Alok Verma, who had been engaged in a bitter fight with his deputy and Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana over corruption allegations.
Alok Verma was replaced by M. Nageswara Rao, but a non-profit challenged his appointment as the acting CBI chief.

Former Law Minister of Nepal Nilambar Acharya appointed as country's ambassador to India.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Acharya in Kathmandu.
Mr. Acharya served as a member of Eminent Persons Group formed by India and Nepal on bilateral relations.
Mr. Acharya had also served as Nepal’s envoy to Sri Lanka.
B.S. Mubarak concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Honduras.
Presently, He is Ambassador of India to the Republic of Guatemala.

Dinesh Bhatia Appointed As The Ambassador of India To The Republic Of Argentina
Shri Dinesh Bhatia (IFS: 1992), presently Consul General, Consulate General of India, Toronto.
He is Indian Foreign service Officer of 1992 batch.

Ajai Kumar interim CEO of YES Bank.
Ajai Kumar, a board member of Yes Bank, will hold the charge of managing director and chief executive officer till the new CEO Ravneet Gill joins the lender.
The current MD and CEO Rana Kapoor’s term in Yes Bank ends.
Mr. Kumar, the former chairman and managing director of Corporation Bank, is the non-executive non-independent director of bank since 2016.

February 4

P.V. Bharathi has taken charge as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation Bank.
She is the first woman to serve the bank in this capacity
Bharathi was the Executive Director in Canara Bank and served as the firm's general manager in the risk management wing. She has more than 37 years of experience in the banking industry. 
Bharathi has been a non-executive director of Can Fin Homes Limited since September 22, 2014 and also served as a director board member of Canbank Venture Capital Limited. She is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB) and a post-graduate in Economics. 

February 5

Nayib Bukele, a former mayor of El Salvador’s capital, has won a landslide victory in presidential election.
The country’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) awarded him 52.93% of the vote with almost 70% of ballots counted
Bukele’s primary opponents ,Carlos Calleja of the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), and Hugo Martinez of the leftist Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation (FMLN)
Carlos Calleja of the Nationalist Republican Alliance was far behind in second with less than 32%.

United States president Donald Trump to nominate David Bernhardt, a former lobbyist for oil and gas companies and other industries, as US secretary of interior.
Bernhardt replaces Ryan Zinke, who resigned in December amid ethics investigations.
Trump nominated Bernhardt for the agency's deputy secretary in April 2017.

February 7

Rahul Jain has taken over as General Manager of Integral Coach Factory (ICF)
Jain was former Assistant General Manager at Western Railway.
He succeeded ICF GM Sudhanshu Mani.
Mani is regarded as the architect of India's first self-propelled long distance "Train 18", which was later named "Vande Bharat Express"
Cognizant appoints Vodafone Executive Brian Humphries as CEO
Humphries will replace Francisco D'Souza, who has been with the firm since 2007.
Cognizant for the first time has picked an outsider.
Cognizant president Rajeev Mehta will step down on April 1, ending speculation that the firm would go for an insider to lead the technology company.
He is currently the CEO of Vodafone Business. Humphries appointments will be effective from April 1, 2019.

Dinkar Gupta appointed Punjab’s new Director General of Punjab.
Gupta, 55, replaces Suresh Arora, who had been on an extension since his retirement on September 30 last year.
Gupta was posted as director general of police (intelligence) which involved the direct supervision of Punjab state intelligence wing, state’s anti-terrorist squad (ATS) and organised crime control unit (OCCU). He played a key role in solving high-profile targeted killing cases and busting more than 50 pro-Khalistan modules. Gupta is going to retire in 2024.
Gupta was also decorated with the Police Medal for Meritorious Services and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2010.

February 9

Shri Sailesh, IAS, Assam-Meghalaya Cadre, 1985 batch takes oath as Secretary of Ministry of Minority Affairs
He will also hold the post of Secretary, Department of Official Language as an additional charge.
The Minister of Minority Affairs, Shri Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi took a meeting with the Secretary and other senior officers of the Ministry and reviewed the progress of scheme implementation for the welfare of minorities.

February 10

Ruchira Kamboj appointed India's Ambassador to Bhutan.
She is serving as the High Commissioner of India to South Africa since 2017
A 1987-cadre Indian Foreign Service (officer), she is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
Kamboj has previously served as the Ambassador/PR to Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO, Paris

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has been elected chairman of the African Union
It was held at the continental body's summit in Ethiopia.
El-Sisi's election brings an end the one-year chairmanship of Rwanda's President Paul Kagame.
The objective would be to improve peace and security in Africa in a holistic and sustainable manner, by keeping mediation and preventive diplomacy as the priority. Also, to counterterrorism by identification their supporters and financers and combating them collectively.
Reacting to Sisi's appointment, the rights group Amnesty International said his chairmanship might undermine the African Union's human rights mechanisms.

Rahadheyshyam Julaniya designated as new Union Sports Secretary.
Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer Radheyshyam Julaniya will replace Rahul Bhatnagar as the Union Sports Secretary.
Bhatnagar had also served as Director General of Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) earlier.
Bhatnagar, an officer of the 1983 batch from Uttar Pradesh, has been released by the Sports Ministry and is set to join the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
Julaniya is a 1985 batch officer and was working with his home cadre till now.

He is presently Ambassador of India to Japan

February 12

Vodafone Idea appoints Suresh Vaswani as independent director.
The alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad is currently acting as an external global advisor to Bain Consulting.
He is also a Board member of Servion Inc., a technology company in the customer experience space and serves as a senior director on Everstone Capital. Where he plays the role of an operating advisor in their IT/BPO portfolios.
Vaswani, 59, earlier held the role of general manager - Solutions, Delivery and Transformation at IBM Global Technology Services and has also served as chairman for Dell India.
On August 30, 2018, National Company Law Tribunal gave the final nod to the Vodafone-Idea merger, the merger was completed on 31 August 2018, and the newly merged entity is named Vodafone Idea Ltd. The merger created the largest telecom company in India by subscribers and by revenue.

February 13

Ashwani Lohani, a retired bureaucrat, has been appointed the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of national carrier Air India.
Mr. Lohani’s first tenure in Air India was from August 2015 to August 2017, during which he helped pilot the organization to a financial operating profit.
Mr. Lohani will replace Pradeep Singh Kharola, who has been appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Lohani held the position for around two years from 2015. In August 2017, he was named the Chairman to the Railway Board. Lohani retired on December 31, 2018
As the Railways’ most senior bureaucrat, Mr. Lohani brought the prestigious bullet train to India. Mr. Lohani was also ITDC chairman as well as director of the Rail Museum in the capital.

Sushil Chandra, the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes or CBDT, has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner.
Mr. Chandra, an IIT graduate and a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre), has recently retired from the CBDT.
Election Commissioners are appointed for a term of six years, or till the age of 65 - whichever is earlier
With his appointment, the Commission now has Sunil Arora as the Chief Election Commissioner and Ashok Lavasa and Mr.Chandra as the two commissioners.

Sachin Mehra To Succeed Mastercard CFO After Retirement
Mastercard Inc, its Chief Financial Officer Martina Hund-Mejean would retire in 2019, after more than a decade in the role.
Hund-Mejean joined Mastercard in November 2007, at the beginning of the 2007-2009 financial crisis, and led the company through the two turbulent years.
Earlier, she served as the senior vice president and treasurer at security systems provider Tyco International Ltd.
Mr. Mehra, who hails from India, joined the Purchase, New York-based payments processor in 2010 as group executive and treasurer, after stints with Hess Corp and General Motors.

IRS officer Pramod Chandra Mody takes charge as new CBDT chairman
Mody, a 1982-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre) officer has been appointed in place of Sushil Chandra, who was named as Election Commissioner ahead of the Lok Sabha polls due this summer.
The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of six members. After the latest appointment, there is a vacancy of two more members in the board.

Flight Lieutenant Hina Jaiswal from Chandigarh became the first female flight engineer to be inducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The flight engineer branch was opened to women officers in 2018.
Flight Lieutenant Hina Jaiswal Commissioned into the IAF’s engineering branch in January 2015. She had created history by becoming the first woman candidate to pursue the elite course.
She will be posted to a helicopter squadron where she will monitor and operate IAF’s complex aircraft in various conditions, right from Siachen Glacier to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
A flight engineer is a member of an aircraft’s flight crew and requires special skills for constantly monitoring and operating its complex systems.

Vice Admiral Ghormade takes over as Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval command
A graduate of the National Defence Academy, Ghormade was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1984.
Ghormade held various operational and staff appointments over the past 35 years, including commands of guided-missile frigate INS Brahmaputra, submarine rescue vessel INS Nireekshak and minesweeper INS Alleppey.
He was also Principal Director of Personnel, Director Naval Plans, and Joint Director Naval Plans at Naval Headquarters besides Director (Military Affairs) at the Ministry of External Affairs.

The US Senate confirmed William Barr as the new attorney general.
Barr will replace Matthew Whitaker, who was the acting attorney general after President Donald Trump fired Jeff Sessions last year
His confirmation comes after a contentious hearing process, during which Democratic lawmakers grilled him about his controversial views on the FBI’s Russia investigation and executive power
Barr previously served as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush from 1991 to 1993.

February 16

Arun Jaitley resumes charge as finance minister
After a gap of over a month, this was the second break within a year that he had to take to undergo medical treatment.
The President of India, as advised by the prime minister, has directed to assign the portfolios of the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs to Arun Jaitley
Shri Piyush Goyal who discharged the responsibility at the ministry of finance.

February 17

UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Chandramouli Ramanathan of India as Controller, Assistant Secretary-General for Programme Planning, Finance and Budget.
He succeeds Bettina TucciBartsiotas of Uruguay.
Ramanathan has served as Acting Controller since September 2018, concurrently with his position as Assistant Secretary-General for Enterprise Resource planning since 2016.

Mary Kom joins PUMA as their ambassador 
Six-time world women boxing champion MC Mary Kom was named as a brand ambassador for global sportswear giant PUMA for a two-year period
‘Magnificent Mary’, as she is popularly known as, will be PUMA India’s new ambassador for the company’s women’s training category and shall represent the brand in marketing campaigns in the country.
She will lead PUMA’s #Do You conversation that aims to motivate women across the nation to be strong and accomplish their goals
Puma had earlier appointed Indian cricket captain Kohli as the brand ambassador for eight years in a deal worth about Rs. 110 crore according to media reports.

Indian-origin professor Faizel Ismail appointed director of South Africa's Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance
FaizelIsmail is known for his role in negotiating major agreements for South Africa, including with the Southern African Customs Union as well as the Trade and Development Agreement with the European Union.
Ismail, a professor at the UCT's School of Economics, has in the past served as an ambassador to the World Trade Organization and a senior advisor to the Minister of Trade and Industry.
He chaired the International Trade and Administration Commission from 2015 to 2018, and was reappointed for a five-year term till 2023.
The school has trained 1,400 students from across Africa in leadership and academic programmes since its establishment in 2011.

Dr. G.C. Anupama, the first woman President to lead Astronomical Society of India
Dr G.C. Anupama was elected to the post in the ASI Executive Council elections for triennium 2019-22. She has become the first woman to head the prime association of professional astronomers in the country.
Dr. G.C. Anupama at present is the Dean and Senior Professor at the Bengaluru based Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA).
She also heads the Indian team engaged in establishing the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) in Hawaii, USA
As the Project In charge of the Leh Telescope in Ladakh, she played a crucial role in the designing and establishment of the telescope, which is at the highest elevation in the world
Dr. G.C. Anupama has also been awarded with Sir C.V. Raman award for young scientists in 2000.

February 20

The government has reappointed A.K. Sharma as the Director (Finance) of Indian Oil Corporation a first under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A.K. Sharma, who superannuated as Director (Finance) of IOC, has been appointed for three months in the same position.
Sharma, who as the finance head of IOC was also in charge of pricing of petrol, diesel and other fuels, has been reemployed keeping in mind the impending general elections.
This is the first time that a PSU director has been reemployed in the same position after attainment of superannuation age of 60 years

Supreme Court Appoints Former Judge DK Jain as First Ombudsman in BCCI
A bench comprising Justices S.A. Bobde and A.M. Sapre announced the name of retired Justice D.K. Jain as the ombudsman in the BCCI.
One of the biggest responsibilities of D.K. Jain would be to handle the differences between the various cricket associations in the country.
PayU India names Anirban Mukherjee as CEO
Anirban Mukherjee, presently the co-chief executive of Reliance Payments has been appointed as the CEO of PayU India owned by Naspers.
He will succeed Amrish Rau. Besides leading PayU’s Indian business, Anirban will join PayU’s global leadership team to support its ambitious plans to unlock innovative credit and financial services for under-served populations in high-growth markets
PayU needed a strong leader to help double its loan book to about 2 Billion dollars within the next two years and Mukherjee’s responsibilities will include managing 100 Million dollars worth of business.

Ajay Singh Appointed as the Head of AIBA Elite Foundation.
Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India has been selected as the president of the Foundation Board for Better Boxing of AIBA (International Boxing Association).
He has been elected to the post for tenure of 4 years.
Ajay Singh is an Indian entrepreneur, co-founder and present owner of Indian low-cost airline SpiceJet. As of June 2017 he holds 59.13% stake in Spice jet airlines.

Additional charge as Secretary of Department of Fisheries given to Tarun Shridhar
1984 batch IAS Tarun Shridhar given an Additional charge of post of secretary of the newly-created Department of Fisheries.
Currently, he is secretary in the department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, with immediate effect and till the appointment of a regular incumbent
The newly-created department will undertake and monitor a number of projects for the development of fisheries sector and also look into the aspects of welfare and protection of fishermen.
Justice Uma Nath Singh takes oath as First Lokayukta of Nagaland
Nagaland Governor PB Acharya administered the oath to him at a function held at Raj Bhavan.
Justice Uma Nath Singh was a former Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.
He will hold the office for a term of five years or till he attains the age of 70 years whichever is earlier.

Paytm Money appoints Suresh Vasudevan as Chief Technology Officer.
Paytm Money – India’s largest online platform for mutual fund investments and the wholly owned subsidiary of One97 Communications Limited
Suresh will be leading the overall engineering and technology functions at Paytm Money and will be based out of Bengaluru.
Suresh Vasudevan comes with over 20 years of experience in product development for various startups and enterprise product companies across payments, e-commerce and fintech domains.

President Donald Trump to nominate Kelly Craft as UN Ambassador
Kelly Craft, the US Ambassador to Canada, is Trump’s second nominee to replace Nikki Haley, who served in the role during the first two years of the administration and often showed flashes of independence from the president on issues including Russia and allegations of sexual harassment.
Craft was an active supporter of President George W Bush, who in 2007 appointed her a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly.
She is married to Joe Craft, who is president of Alliance Resource Partners, which describes itself as the second largest coal producer in the Eastern United States.
India's Mushtaque Ahmad elected as Vice-President of AHF (Asian Hockey Federation).
Asima Ali was elected as Executive Committee member of the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) for a four-year term in Gifu, Japan.
Mushtaque Ahmad is currently serving as the President of Hockey India, while Ali is the Vice-President of the national federation.
Besides Ali, Mushtaque Ahmad too have now become a member of the AHF executive board.
The AHF Executive Board manages the affairs of the continental federation, implements the decisions of the AHF Congress, supervises over the AHF CEO and professional staff, as well as appoints the AHF Committees.

February 25

Mohamed Tahir Ayala, governor of Gezira state, was appointed Sudan's prime minister.
Sudan’s Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf was appointed as First Vice President while remaining in his defense post.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir declared a one-year nationwide state of emergency and set up a caretaker administration but retained his defense, foreign and justice ministers

Brijbhushan Sharan Singh was elected unopposed as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for a third time.
Election of the Office Bearers and Executive Committee Members of WFI for the next years term (2019-2023) were held here at the Constitution Club of India
Along with Brij Bhushan, I.D. Nanavati has been elected as the Senior Vice President.

February 26

Former PepsiCo chief Indra Nooyi joins Amazon board of directors
Ms. Nooyi, who stepped down as CEO of PepsiCo in October last year, she is the second woman of colour to be added on the Amazon’s board of Directors.
Early this month, Starbucks executive Rosalind Brewer joined the Amazon Board.
She was PepsiCo CEO from October 2006 to October 2018, where she also served as the Chairman of its board of directors from May 2007 to February 2019.
The was elected to PepsiCo’s board of directors and became its President and Chief Financial Officer in 2001, and held leadership roles in finance, corporate strategy and development, and strategic planning after joining PepsiCo in 1994.

February 27

Nigeria election: Muhammadu Buhari re-elected as president.
Nigerian voters reelected Muhammadu Buhari to serve a second and final term in office as president of Africa’s most populous nation and its biggest economy
The 76-year-old defeated his main rival, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, with a margin of nearly four million votes.
Mr. Abubakar's People's Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the result. Turnout was a record low at just 35.6%.
He becomes only the second man to achieve the feat of securing two straight terms. The first president was Olusegun Obasanjo who won two terms (1999 – 2007).

Dr. K.J. Srinivasa appointed High Commissioner of Cooperative Republic of Guyana
He is currently serving as the Consul General, Consulate General of India, and Johannesburg.
He would replace Venkatachalam Mahalingam who came here in 2014.

February 28

IDBI Bank appoints LIC's Hemant Bhargava as non-executive chairman.
Bhargava is currently the Chairman (in-charge) and Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
Bhargava has been appointed for three years or until he continues in his position at LIC.
The life insurer is now the majority shareholder in IDBI Bank with a 51% stake. It became the promoter of the bank after the acquisition of stake from the government of India.
LIC has also proposed a change of name of the bank to either LIC IDBI Bank or LIC Bank. IDBI Bank board had on February 4 approved a proposal to change its name subject to a ‘no objection’ from Reserve Bank of India, shareholders as well as name availability by Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) had in June 2018 made an exception when it allowed LIC to hold 51% in IDBI Bank. Insurance regulations state an insurer can hold only 15% equity stake in an entity to ensure there is no concentration of risks. In January 2019, LIC completed the deal with IDBI Bank.

The National Book Trust (NBT) has appointed educationist and author Govind Prasad Sharma as its new Chairman.
NBT, an autonomous organization under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, was previously chaired by Baldeo Sharma since 2015.
Sharma has served as the Principal of Government P.G. College, Madhya Pradesh. Later, he was appointed as the Additional Director of Higher Education (Gwalior Chambal Division) and has also been the Director of Madhya Pradesh Hindi Granth Akademi.
Sharma also served as Vice Chairman of Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education.
