Jair Bolsonaro Takes Oath As New President of Brazil
Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as Brazil's President in a ceremony at Brazil's National Congress Building.
Bolsonaro is a former Army captain and admirer of the country's 1964-1985 military dictatorship.
Bolsonaro was a seven-term fringe congressman who rode a wave of anti-establishment anger to became Brazil's first far-right president since a military dictatorship gave way to civilian rule three decades ago.

Justice TBN Radhakrishnan sworn in as First Chief Justice of Telangana High Court
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narasimhan administered oath to him at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan.
The state of Telangana will have its first independent high court.
Justice Praveen Kumar will take over as the acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Sheikh Hasina Wins Third Term as PM of Bangladesh
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s alliance won Bangladesh’s election with a thumping majority giving her a third straight term.
The alliance dominated by her Awami League, won 287 of the 298 seats for which results have been declared. There are 300 constituencies in the country.

Axis Bank appoints Amitabh Chaudhry as MD & CEO
Private sector lender Axis Bank appointed Amitabh Chaudhry as Managing Director & CEO from January 1, after incumbent Shikha Sharma steps down at the end of this year.
Chaudhry, currently the MD & CEO of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company, has been appointed as MD and CEO for a period of 3 years, with effect from January 1, 2019 up to December 31, 2021.

Govt appoints Hemant Bhargava interim chairman of LIC
Bhargava was appointed as the managing director (MD) of LIC in February 2017. Apart from Bhargava, there are two more MDs of LIC currently.
He was instrumental in completing the design and setting up a separate microinsurance vertical which was LIC’s first comprehensive enterprise-wide initiative in financial inclusion space.
He also set up a new joint venture in collaboration with the banking industry, and founded LIC Cards Services Ltd.

Brazil elected Jair Bolsonaro as its 42nd president
Brazil elected Jair Bolsonaro as its 42nd presidenti. Mr. Bolsonaro, 63, won the presidential election by a wide margin against Fernando Haddad of the left-wing Workers’ Party.

Pentagon comptroller David Norquist named acting deputy defence secretary of United States
He will succeed incumbent Chief Justice Saqib Nisar who will be retiring from service on January 17, 2019.
Justice Khosa, 64, has been a senior Justice of the Supreme Court since December 2016.
He has also served as an advocate in the Lahore High Court and Supreme Court.

Saurabh Kumar appointed as Chairman Of Ordnance Factory Board
Saurabh Kumar appointed as the Director General of Ordnance Factories (DGOF) and chairman of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
Kumar, a 1982-batch Indian Ordnance Factory Service officer, is an M-Tech in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.
Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) is an industrial organization, functioning under the Department of Defence Production of Ministry of Defence, Government of India.

Sheikh Hasina sworn in as Bangladesh Prime Minister for fourth term.
Sheikh Hasina was sworn in as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister for a record fourth term after a crushing election victory marred by deadly violence and claims of widespread rigging.
Her ruling Awami League party and its allies won the December elections.
President Mohammad Abdul Hamid administered the oath of office to Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka.
This is the first time Hasina is forming a cabinet with the members of her own party.

Kumar Rajesh Chandra Appointed Director-General of SSB
Civil Aviation Security head and senior IPS officer Kumar Rajesh Chandra was appointed as the director general of the SashastraSeemaBal (SSB).
Chandra, a 1985-batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre, is at present the director general of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).

AlokVerma Reinstated As CBI Chief By Supreme Court
It came in three months after the government divested him of his powers and sent him on forced leave.
AlokVerma and his deputy RakeshAsthana were both sent on leave in October amid a bitter feud between the CBI's top two.

However, at present, Alok Verma cannot take any major policy decisions.

Gita Gopinath appointed IMF Chief Economist
Gita Gopinath, professor at Harvard University, has been appointed chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The India-born economist will succeed Maurice Obstfeld, who announced his retirement in July.

Pranav R Mehta Becomes 1st Indian to Head Global Solar Council
A visionary in the field of Solar Energy and the chairman of National Solar Energy Federation, Pranav R Mehta, has taken over as the president of Global Solar Council (GSC).
He has become the first Indian to head the GSC.
The Global Solar Council (GSC) was launched on December 6, 2015, following the historic United Nations Climate Change Conference (UN COP 21).

Vikram Misri takes charge as new Indian ambassador to China.
A 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Misri replaced Gautam Bambawale who retired in November last year.
Misri has taken the charge of the country's envoy at a time when India and China are trying to deepen their cooperation in various areas, leaving behind 2017 Doklam standoff which was the most serious military face-off in decades.

Apsara Reddy Appointed Congress's First Transgender Officebearer.
The Congress has appointed transgender activist Apsara Reddy as a national general secretary of its women's wing, the Mahila Congress, making her the 134-year-old party's first transgender office bearer.

Taiwan appoints new prime minister after resignations over poll defeats.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen appointed Su Tseng-chang, a two-term former chairman of her Democratic Progressive Party.
Taiwan appointed the former chairman of its ruling pro-independence party as premier, after the incumbent resigned along with the entire cabinet, in response to local election defeats.

Venezuela President Maduro sworn in for second term
Nicolas Maduro Sworn in as new Venezuela President for 2nd Term for a new 6-year term.
Venezuela is one of the world’s largest oil producers and holds the presidency of oil cartel Opec until 2025.

Lt Gen J.S. Nain takes over as Commander of Army's Rising Star Corps
Lt Gen J.S. Nain took over as the 14th Corps Commander of the Rising Star Corps from Lt Gen Y.V.K. Mohan here, a defense spokesperson said.
Lt Gen Nain was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion of the Indian Army's Dogra Regiment in June 1983.

TCS Appoints Daniel Callahan As Independent Director
India’s largest software exporter Tata Consultancy Services has appointed Don Callahan as an additional and independent director for a period of 5 years, based on the recommendations of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee.
He was the Chief Administrative Officer and Head of Operations and Technology at Citigroup and was a member of Citi’s Operating Committee earlier.

Former chief statistician TCA Anant assumes charge as UPSC member
He was administered the oath of office by UPSC chairman Arvind Saxena.
Anant was appointed Chief Statistician of India-cum-Secretary, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, in June 2010 for five years.
In 2015, he was given extension till January 31, 2018, the date of his superannuation on completion of 60 years of age.
As per rules, a member of the UPSC can have a maximum of six-year tenure or till an incumbent attains the age of 65.

Axis appoints HDFC Bank veteran as Chief Credit Officer
Retired HDFC Bank executive and former Federal Bank board member Deepak Maheshwari has taken charge as chief credit officer (CCO) at Axis Bank as part of an ongoing reshuffle undertaken by new CEO Amitabh Chaudhry.
Maheshwari was also granted an exemption to take over as CCO by the board of Axis Bank as he is now 64 which is above the bank’s retirement age of 60.

Manu Sawhney Appointed New ICC CEO
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Manu Sawhney has been appointed as the organization's new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Sawhney, the former CEO of Singapore Sports Hub and Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports, will join the organization before formally taking over the reins from David Richardson in July following the ICC World Cup 2019.

January 18

President Ram Nath Kovind approved the elevation of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dinesh Maheshwari to the Supreme Court.
Justice Khanna is presently a judge of the Delhi High Court. Justice Maheshwari is the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Justice RanjanGogoi had recommended their elevation to the apex court.

Sanjay Jain appointed as Additional Solicitor General in Supreme court
President Ram NathKovind appointed senior advocate Sanjay Jain as Additional Solicitor General of India for the Supreme Court.
He will be on the post till June 30,2020.
Additional Solicitor General is appointed under Law Officers Act 1987, is the third largest law officerof the Central Government. It is a duty of the Additional Solicitor Genral to assist the Solicitor General.

January 19

Justice AsifSaeedKhosa, known for adding lyrical flair in his judgments, sworn in as the Chief Justice of Pakistan in a ceremony at Islamabad.
He is the 26th Chief Justice of Pakistan.
The Chief Justice is nominated by Imran khan, the PM of Pakistan and appointed by ArifAlvi, the President of Pakistan. Prior to this Mr. Khosa served as judge of the Lahore High Court. He succeeded Mian Saqib Nisar.

Prabhat Singh Appointed DG In NHRC
The Department of Personnel & Training, Government of India has appointed Senior IPS Officer Prabhat Singh as Director General (Investigation) in the National Human Rights Commission.
Singh, a 1985 batch IPS Officer of AGMUT cadre is at present Special Director, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He has been appointed to the post for a period up to April 30, 2020.

Andry Rajoelina Sworn In As Madagascar President
Andry Rajoelina was sworn in as President of Madagascar at capital city of Antananarivo.
High Constitutional Court had declared him as winner of the Presidential election on 8th January with 55.66% of the votes.
It is the first time in the history of the country since its independence that a democratic power transfer and a peaceful power transition took place between two elected Presidents.

Priyanka Gandhi appointed AICC general secretary for UP East
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was on January 23, 2019 appointed AICC general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East.

Priyanka Gandhi is scheduled to take over as AICC general secretary for UP East in the first week of February.

Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba Commissioned New Naval Air Base 'INS Kohassa'
Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba commissioned the new Naval Air Base ‘INS Kohassa’ at Diglipur in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The airbase will be used to handle operations of helicopters and small aircraft like the Dornier.
The new airbase in the northernmost part of the Andaman Nicobar Islands will be used for both Defence and civil aircraft.

Ravneet Gill To Replace Rana Kapoor as Yes Bank MD and CEO
Yes Bank has appointed veteran banker Ravneet Singh Gill as its new MD & CEO and the lender has also received the RBI’s approval for the same.He will join the bank on or before March 1, 2019.
Mr Gill is currently the chief Deutsche Bank’s India operations. Gill joined Deutsche Bank in 1991 and has worked across different businesses including corporate banking, capital markets and wealth management.

Piyush Goyal Named Interim Finance Minister
Piyush Goyal has been named the interim Finance Minister and interim Minister of Corporate Affairs during Arun Jaitley's indisposition. Goyal will retain his existing portfolios of coal and railways.
Union Minister Arun Jaitley, 66, had left for the United States for a regular medical check-up.
Jaitley will be designated as a minister without a portfolio during his period of indisposition.

Sultan Abdullah Elected New Malaysian King
Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah was elected as Malaysia's new king by the members of the country's royal families.
The 59-year-old was earlier appointed the Sultan of the Malaysian state of Pahang.
He replaced Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, who stepped down recently, making it the first abdication in Malaysia's history.

IndiGo appoints Ronojoy Dutta as new CEO
IndiGo owner InterGlobe Aviation appointed Ronojoy Dutta as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company with immediate effect.
The company has also approved the appointment of Meleveetil Damodaran, the Independent Non-Executive Director, as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company with immediate effect.
Dutta also served as the President of Air Sahara from 2005 to 2008.

Usha Ananthasubramanian Becomes 1st Woman IBA Chief
Usha Ananthasubramanian, MD and CEO, Allahabad Bank, has been elected the first woman chairman of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA).
Usha was elected IBA Chairman for the year 2017-18 by its Managing Committee.
IBA Chairman’s position fell vacant following the superannuation of Jatinder Bir Singh.
Rajnish Kumar, Chairman, State Bank of India, was elected Deputy Chairman of IBA for the year 2017-18.

Pakistan Appoints Its First Ever Female Hindu Civil Judge
SumanKumari has become the first Hindu woman to have been appointed as a civil judge in Pakistan after passing an examination for induction of judicial officers.
The first judge from the Hindu community was Justice Rana Bhagwandas, who served as the acting chief justice for brief periods between 2005 and 2007.

Poonam Khetrapal Singh Re-appointed Regional Director Of WHO South-East Asia
Poonam Khetrapal Singh has been appointed Regional Director for World Health Organization South-East Asia, for a second five-year term.
The WHO Executive Board unanimously endorsed Dr. Khetrapal Singh, who was earlier also unanimously nominated by 11 Member countries of the Region for another five years.

Dilip Sadarangani Appointed As Chairman Of Federal Bank
Kerala based private sector lender Federal Bank has appointed Dilip Sadarangani as the part-time chairman.
The appointment of Sadarangani, who has been on the bank's board since 2013, has been cleared by the Reserve Bank.

LT Gen Rajeev Chopra Takes Over as Director General of NCC
Lt Gen Rajeev Chopra assumed the appointment of Director General of NCC (DGNCC). Commissioned in the Madras Regiment in December 1980, Lt Gen Chopra is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
Lt Gen Rajeev Chopra has commanded an infantry battalion in Operation Rhino (Assam). He has commanded a Brigade in Eastern Command and was Inspector General of HQ IGAR (South) in the insurgency-torn state of Manipur.
