October 1

6-member board led by Uday Kotak set up to appoint chairman of IL&FS
Ministry of Corporate Affairs appealed the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to change of the board and management control of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS).
The NCLT has changed and appointed 6 members in its place in the board of the company. They are:
Uday Kotak, MD of Kotak Mahindra Bank,
G.N. Bajpai, former Sebi chairman,
G.C. Chaturvedi, chairman of ICICI Bank,
Malini Shankar and Vineet Nayyar, retired IAS officers, and
Nandkishore, veteran auditor.

Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad elected as new Hockey India President
Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad was named as the new President of Hockey India (HI) following the 8th Hockey India Congress and Elections. Ahmad, who formerly held the post of Secretary General, takes over from outgoing President Rajinder Singh after being elected unopposed.

Air Marshal Harjit Singh Arora appointed as new SWAC chief
Air Marshal Harjit Singh Arora took over as the new Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the South Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Gandhinagar.
He replaced Air Marshal RK Dhir, who retired a day ago and was appointed as an advisor to the Gujarat government.

India-born Harvard professor Gita Gopinath was appointed the chief economist of IMF
Harvard economist Gita Gopinath has been appointed as the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She will be assuming the post of economic counsellor and director of the IMF’s Research Department.

OPPI re-elected A Vaidheesh as President for 2nd term
The Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) has re-elected A Vaidheesh as President for the second consecutive year. Vaidheesh is working as Vice President, South Asia & Managing Director, in GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals.

Arun Kumar appointed Director General of RPF
Senior IPS officer Arun Kumar was appointed Director-General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF). He will succeed Dharmendra Kumar. Mr. Kumar, a 1985 batch officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, is serving as Special Director-General of the Border Security Force.
He has worked as Joint Director of the CBI and was in charge of probe into the 2008 Aarushi murder case.

Shri Rajesh Agrawal Takes over charge as a New Member (Rolling Stock), Railway Board
Shri Rajesh Agrawal has taken over charge as the new Member (Rolling Stock), Railway Board and ex-officio Secretary to the Government of India.
Shri Rajesh Agrawal belongs to the 1980 batch of Indian Railways Services of Mechanical Engineering (IRSME). Prior to this appointment, he was General Manager of Modern Coach Factory at Raebarely.

Rangachari Sridharan appointed chief of National Financial Reporting Authority
Former IAS officer Rangachari Sridharan was appointed as first chief of National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA).
Sridharan, a 1983 batch (retired) IAS officer of Karnataka cadre, will hold the post of chairperson, NFRA, for three years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years.
Besides him, Prasenjit Mukherjee has been appointed as full-time member of the authority for the same tenure.
Mukherjee is a 1980 batch (retired) officer of Indian Audit and Accounts Service.

Sudhir Garg appointed as CMD of National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC)
MSME Joint Secretary Sudhir Garg has assumed charge as interim CMD of National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) after the Public Enterprises Selection Board did not find any suitable candidate for the post.

Facebook names Adam Mosseri as CEO of Instagram
Facebook has announced its new Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, almost a week after resignation of Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Mosseri was previously the Vice President of Product at the company.

Barham Salih elected new president of Iraq
Iraqi lawmakers have elected Barham Salih as the new president of Iraq after a protracted political wrangling, marking a crucial step in forming the government in the next four years.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi sworn-in as 46th Chief Justice of India
Justice Ranjan Gogoi became the 46th Chief Justice of India, the first from the northeast to take over the post, as he replaced justice Dipak Misra.
President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to the 63-year-old Justice Gogoi during a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Darbar Hall.

Ramon Laguarta succeeds Pepsico’s Indian-origin CEO Indra Nooyi
Ramon Laguarta assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of global beverage giant PepsiCo, succeeding India-born Indra Nooyi who had helmed the American company for 12 years, breaking the corporate glass ceiling and leading Pepsi through changing consumer preference for healthier snacks and drinks.

Justice Madan Lokur nominated as NALSA Executive Chairman
Senior judge of the Supreme Court, Madan Bhimarao Lokur, is now the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority of India (NALSA). President Ramnath Kovind nominated Justice Lokur to the post.

World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) appoints Vikram Limaye as chairman of working committee.
At the World Federation of Exchanges’ 58th general assembly and annual meeting in Athens, the National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) VikramLimaye was chosen for the post.

Pankaj Sharma appointed India's ambassador to UN Conference on Disarmament.
Sharma is currently the joint secretary (Disarmament and International Security Division) in the Ministry of External Affairs.
He will replace Amandeep Gill

Srinivasan Swamy becomes new chairman of International Advertising Association
Indian advertising veteran and RK Swamy Hansa Group chairman Srinivasan Swamy took over as new chairman and world president of the International Advertising Association (IAA).
Swamy is the first Indian to hold the prestigious seat at the 80-year old institution, which is considered the world's most influential network of marketing and communication leaders.
He is also Vice Chairman of Asian Federation of Advertising Associations. He had served in key positions in Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), Advertising Standards Council of India and as board member of Audit Bureau of Circulations.

October 12

Tushar Mehta appointed as the new Solicitor General of India.
The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of Mehta with effect from the day of assumption of charge of the office for a period till June 30, 2020.
He is currently representing the state of Jammu and Kashmir in the ongoing debate on Article 35A in the Supreme Court.
He is also the Additional Solicitor General (ASG).
The post was vacant since October, 2017 after the resignation of former solicitor general of India Ranjit Kumar.

Priyank Kanoongo appointed chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights(NCPCR) is an Indian governmental commission, established by an Act of Parliament, the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act in December 2005.

Shekhar Mande is new CSIR DG.
India’s leading expert in DNA fingerprinting and diagnostics, Shekhar C. Mande was appointed Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
He was also the 2005 biological sciences recipient of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the apex science award in India, for his work in structural biology of proteins.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)was established by the Government of India in September of 1942 as an autonomous body that has emerged as the largest research and development organisation in India.

Online financial services marketplace BankBazaar appointed former RBI Deputy Governor S S Mundra has been appointed as an advisor to the company.

Arundhati Bhattacharya joins RIL as independent director.
The former State Bank of India head becomes the first woman outside the Ambani family to join the RIL board. More corporate engagement likely for the banking veteran.
Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), the oil-to-yarn and retail-to-telecom conglomerate led by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani.
The move is significant for Bhattacharya, who has been ranked no. 1 on the Fortune India Most Powerful Women in business list for four consecutive years between 2014-2017.

Sajjan Jindal elected as Treasurer of World Steel Association.
The association has also appointed Tata Steel MD TV Narendran and Arcelor Mittal Chief LN Mittal as its members.
The appointments were made during the World Steel General Assembly in Tokyo, Japan during which the Board of Directors elected new officers for 2018-19 at the. The new officers were elected for a one-year period.
The World Steel Association (world steel) is a non-profit organisation with headquarters in Brussels, Belgium and its second office in Beijing, China.

Govt appoints Nageshwar Rao as interim CBI chief.
Rao is presently the Joint Director, CBI. He is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1986 batch.
The top two officers of the CBI, present Director, CBI, Alok Verma and Special Director, CBI, Rakesh Asthana, have been sent on "compulsory leave" as the spat between them reached the Delhi High Court.

Paytm Payments Bank appoints Satish Kumar Gupta as MD and CEO.
Gupta, who has over 35 years of leadership experience, previously had stints as the chief product officer at National Payments Corporation of India and State Bank of India.
Gupta’s appointment comes a few months after Paytm said Renu Satti had stepped down as the CEO of Paytm Payments Bank to head the new retail segment at the company as chief operating officer.

IRS officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra appointed as Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief
Sanjay Kumar Mishra is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Income Tax cadre of 1984 batch.
He replaces Karnal Singh whose term as ED director. He is an Indian Police Service Officer (IPS) of 1984 batch of Union Territories cadre.
Enforcement Directorate (ED) is a specialized financial investigation agency under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
It is enforced under Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA) & Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).
