September 1

Binoy Kumar appointed as new steel secretary replaces Aruna Sharma
Senior IAS officer Binoy Kumar took over the charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Steel. He succeeds Aruna Sharma.
Kumar has also worked as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Ministry of External Affairs and Joint Secretary in Ministry of Defence.

Madhavan assumes charge as CMD at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
R. Madhavan took over as Chairman and Managing Director of defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) from T. Suvarna Raju.
Prior to this, he was heading the Accessories Division of HAL at Lucknow as an Executive Director.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi to take oath as Chief Justice of India
Justice Ranjan Gogoi is all set to be the next Chief Justice of India. Gogoi will take oath on October 3.
Incumbent Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra, who is set to retire on October 2, has recommended his name to the government for the post.
Gogoi is expected to retire on November 17 2019, as the Supreme Court judge.
Justice Ranjan Gogoi, born in 1954, joined the bar association in 1978. In 2001, Gogoi was appointed as a judge in Gauhati High Court.

September 4

Justice Goswami is acting as CJ of Gauhati High Court
Justice Arup Kumar Goswami was appointed as the acting chief justice of the Gauhati High Court.
His appointment will come into effect from September 6, following the retirement of high court Chief Justice Ajit Singh.
The Gauhati High Court has an approved strength of 24 judges, but is functioning with 17 a shortage of seven judges.

SBI Mutual Fund appoints Ashwani Bhatia as MD, CEO
SBI Mutual Fund has appointed Ashwani Bhatia as its managing director and chief executive officer.
Bhatia takes over from Anuradha Rao, who now returns to State Bank of India (SBI) as deputy managing director.
Before joining SBI Mutual Funds, he was in charge of revamping the entire credit structure and processes of SBI. He has also been associated with SBI Capital Markets, as president and chief operating officer and whole time director. Over his tenure of 33 years with the SBI, Bhatia has traversed through various functions and assignments possessing rich experience in various facets of commercial banking such as forex and treasury, retail credit and liability and corporate credit.

September 7

Anshula Kant appointed as new SBI MD; to serve till September 2020
The government appointed Anshula Kant as Managing Director of State Bank of India. Anshula Kant will serve as the MD till she attains the age of superannuation on September 30, 2020, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. With her appointment, the India's largest public sector bank has total three MDs, including PK Gupta and DK Khara.
Anshula Kant, a graduate in Economic Honours from Lady Shri Ram College for Women and a Post-graduate in economics from Delhi School of Economics joined State Bank of India as a probationary officer in 1983. She has handled many crucial assignments over three decades in the bank. She has an extensive experience in retail banking, corporate credit, cross-border trade and banking in developed markets - both retail and wholesale.

Bimal Jalan heads panel to select next CEA
The government has appointed a panel under former Reserve Bank of India governor Bimal Jalan to select the next Chief Economic Adviser in the finance ministry, two months after it sought applications for the post after Arvind Subramanian resigned from office.
Jalan confirmed to Mint that he will be heading such a panel.
Apart from Jalan, secretary of the department of personnel and training C Chandramouli and economic affairs secretary Subhash Chandra Garg will be members of the panel which will vet the applications received and conduct the interviews.
However, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will need to give the final stamp of approval for the appointment of the next CEA.

HDFC Life's Amitabh Chaudhry appointed as CEO & MD of Axis Bank
Amitabh Chaudhry has been appointed managing director and chief executive of Axis Bank for a three-year term. He will take charge on January 1, 2019.
Chaudhry, 54, will succeed the current MD & CEO Shikha Sharma, whose term ends on December 31. Chaudhry, who’s MD & CEO at HDFC Life Insurance, has resigned from the post.
Chaudhry, an engineering graduate from the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani and an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, has been associated with HDFC Life since January 2010. He had earlier held senior management positions in Bank of America, Calyon Bank and Infosys BPO.

Aegon Life appoints Ahmed Zackaria as Chief Distribution Officer.
Aegon Life Insurance appointed Ahmed Zackaria as the Chief Distribution Officer. In this role, Zackaria will manage all the sales channels for the company.
Zackaria has a rich experience of over two decades in Corporate and Retail Banking. His recent assignment has been with IndusInd Bank and prior to that he has been associated with ICICI Bank for over 13 years where he has built a profitable distribution business for different geographies across the country.
Vineet Arora is the MD and CEO Aegon Life Insurance.

Societe Generale appoints Sunil Shah as CEO of India, Romania units.
Societe Generale, French financial services major, has appointed Sunil Shah as chief executive officer of the company’s solution global solution centres in India and Romania
Sunil Shah will be based in Bangalore. He will report to Christophe Leblanc, Group Head of Corporate Resources and Innovation. Earlier, he had worked with Fidelity Investments and led the asset management IT team.

HDFC Life appoints Vibha Padalkar as new MD & CEO
HDFC Standard Life Insurance has appointed Vibha Padalkar as its new Managing Director and CEO for a period of three.
Before her elevation, Padalkar was the insurer’s Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer.
Her elevation comes after Amitabh Chaudhry resigned as the chief of HDFC Standard Life Insurance to join Axis Bank as Managing Director and CEO.

D. Shivakumar elected as Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) Chairman
D. Shivakumar, former PepsiCo India head, has been appointed as its chairman. Shivakumar, who is presently Group Executive President, Corporate Strategy at Aditya Birla Group, was unanimously elected as the chairman of the Board of ASCI for a period of three years.
Sony Pictures Networks India President - Network Sales & International Business Rohit Gupta was elected as the Vice-Chairman and Media Brands CEO Shashidhar Sinha was re-appointed as honorary treasurer of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI).

September 13

L.K. Advani renominated as Chairman of Ethics Committee of Lok Sabha
Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani has been renominated as the chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. The Committee examines complaints related to any unethical conduct by members of the Lower House.
Former Uttarakhand CM Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” of the BJP was renamed the chairman of the Lok Sabha Committee on Government Assurances.

Tajinder Mukherjee assumes charge as Chairman and Managing Director of National Insurance Company Limited (NIC)
Tajinder Mukherjee has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director of National Insurance Company Limited (NIC).
Prior to her joining the NIC, she was the General Manager and Chief Underwriting Officer of New India Assurance.
She holds a Bachelor‘s Degree in Commerce from the University of Delhi and is a Fellow in Insurance of the Insurance Institute of India.

Moutaz Mousa Abdallah becomes Sudan’s new PM
Moutaz Mousa Abdallah has become the Sudan's new Prime Minister. A 21-member cabinet was sworn in at the presidential palace in Khartoum. Mousa Abdallah is also holding the finance portfolio in a bid to revive the country's ailing economy.
Sudan has been grappling with an acute foreign exchange shortage and inflation above 65 percent for several months.

Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma signed as ambassadors of Skill India Campaign
The Hindi film stars- Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, have been signed on to promote and endorse the Skill India Mission, chaired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Anindo Majumdar appointed as Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)
Financial Commissioner of Delhi Anindo Majumdar has been appointed as Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Majumdar's appointment as Secretary, CVC.
Majumdar, a 1985-batch IAS officer of Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Mizoram Union Territories or AGMUT cadre, was in news in 2015 for issuing an order posting Shakuntala Gamlin as acting chief secretary on the direction of former Lt Governor of Delhi, Najeeb Jung.

Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas appointed as DAE Secretary
The Centre has appointed Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas as the new Secretary of Department of Atomic Energy, and Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission till May 3, 2021. At present Vyas is the Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai.
The noted nuclear scientist succeeds Shekar Basu.

Government appoints four members to local boards of RBI
Rakesh Jain and Sachin Chaturvedi are among four people appointed members in local boards of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Jain and Chaturvedi have been appointed as member in Southern local board and Eastern local board of the central bank.
Revathy Iyer and Raghvendra Narayan Dubey have been appointed as member in Northern local board of the central bank.
Iyer and Chaturvedi have also been nominated as Director on the central board of the RBI.

D. Purandeswari has been appointed as independent director on the board of Air India Ltd.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved her appointment as non-official independent director on the board of Air India Ltd. for a period of three years, without citing any other details such as profession or background of the person.

A Gitesh Sarma appointed as Secretary (West) in Ministry of External Affairs
A Gitesh Sarma has been appointed as Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs.
Sarma, a 1986-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, has been appointed to the post in place of Ruchi Ghanashyam. He is at present additional secretary in the foreign ministry.

Anil Kumar Chaudhary appointed as new Chairman of Steel Authority of India Ltd
Anil Kumar Chaudhary has been appointed as the new chairman of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL).
Chaudhary, at present, has been serving as the Director (Finance) in the country’s largest steel making company.
The post of SAIL chairman fell vacant with the retirement of P K Singh.

Facebook to have new head in India
Facebook has appointed Ajit Mohan as managing director and vice-president of the social networking site’s India operations.
Mr. Mohan, who was previously the CEO of video streaming platform Hotstar, will join Facebook early next year. The post was lying vacant since the exit of Umang Bedi last year.

Anil Khosla to be appointed as new Vice Chief of Air Force
Air Marshal Anil Khosla will be appointed as the new Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force.
The Indian Air force, Air Marshal R. Nambiar, who is currently serving as the Deputy Air Chief, is all set to be designated as the Commander-in-Chief of Eastern Air command which is headquartered at Shillong.
The position of Commander-in-Chief of Western Air Command, on the other hand, will be handed over to Air Marshal HS Arora.

N. Ravi, former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, elected as PTI chairman
N. Ravi, Publisher and former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, was unanimously elected as chairman of the Press Trust of India (PTI). Vijay Kumar Chopra, Chief Editor of the Punjab Kesari Group of newspapers, was elected Vice-Chairman.
Mr. Ravi succeeds Viveck Goenka, chairman and managing director of the Express Group.
