Manoj Das honoured with Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja National Award.
Manoj Das, an eminent English and Odia writer, received the Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja National Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature.
Manoj Das is a noted writer in both Odia and English literature.
He is a philosopher, a thinker-writer whose works can be defined as quest for finding the eternal truth in everyday circumstances.
He received recognition in the form of the SahityaAkademi award, 1972, in English, Orissa SahityaAkademi award, 1965 and 1982, Sarala award, 1981, Vishuba award, 1986 and SahityaBharati award, 1995, SaraswatiSamman, 2000, Padmashri, 2001.
His writings, revealing the deeper truth and the untraced aspects behind current issues, have been highly appreciated.

January 6

Wahengbam Lamnganba Singh from Manipur to receive National Bravery Award
15-year-old Wahengbam Lamnganba Singh of Manipur, has been selected by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) for receiving National Bravery Award.
He will be honoured because he had saved his two and half year’s old cousin from drowning in a pond.
He would receive the award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi.
The National Bravery Awards are given under the aegis of the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) on every Republic Day.
These awards are broadly classified into five categories, including the Bharat Award, Sanjay Chopra Award, Geeta Chopra Award, Bapu Gaidhani Award and the General National Bravery Awards.

Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards announced
A benchmark for excellence in Indian journalism, the awards this year were handed over by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu.
The 12th edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards saw twenty seven journalists winning the prestigious award for outstanding work done in 2016.
The Express Group instituted the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in 2005 as part of the centenary year celebrations of its founder, Ramnath Goenka
The awards, which come with a trophy and a reward of Rs. 1 lakh to each of the winners, recognise courage and commitment and showcase the outstanding contributions of journalists from across the country.

The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, the USA.
These annual awards honour the best in Motion Pictures and Television for the year 2018.
This year’s event was hosted by actors Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, who took over from 2018 host, comedian Seth Meyers.
Netflix’s black and white intimate drama Roma bagged both Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film
Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born was largely shut out, barring a Best Original Song trophy.

January 8

IIT Professor awarded with the National Geospatial Award for Excellence
Jayanta Kumar Ghosh, a professor at the civil engineering department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Roorkee, was conferred the National Geospatial Award for Excellence - 2017 (Lifetime Achievement Award) at the Space Application Centre in Ahmedabad.
The Indian Society for Remote Sensing is an organisation known in the area of space science, remote sensing and geo-spatial technology.

M. Venkaiah Naidu conferred textiles awards in New Delhi and presented commemorative stamps on GI registered handicrafts.
The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu conferred awards on 17 persons for their outstanding contribution in different fields of textiles sector during the day long ‘National Conclave on Accomplishments and Way Forward for Textiles’
The national conclave which was organised to address the issues faced by textile sector was inaugurated by the Union Textiles Minister, Smriti Irani and was also addressed by the Minister of State, Ajay Tamta and Textiles Secretary, Raghvendra Singh.
During the ceremony Vice President, Shri Naidu was presented commemorative stamps on GI registered handicrafts.

Journalist Dinu Randive conferred with lifetime achievement award
Veteran journalist DinuRandive has been conferred with the lifetime achievement award by the Mantralaya and Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh, an association of journalists covering Maharashtra legislature and secretariat.
Mr. Randive started his journalistic career in 1956. He also participated in the freedom struggle, the Sanyukta Maharashtra movement and the Goa liberation movement.
Award winners in other categories included Vishwas Waghmode, Mahesh Tiwari and Prajakta Pol.

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) pavilion received ‘Exhibitor of the Year Award’ at 106th Indian Science Congress in Punjab
DRDO’s outdoor exhibits included surface-to-air missile system – Akash, model of Brah Mos missile, remotely operated vehicle – Daksh, heavy weight torpedo – Varunastra, Laser Ordnance Disposal System (LORDS) and Vehicle Mounted Dazzler etc.

Adi Godrej conferred ICSI lifetime award
Industrialist and Godrej Group Chairman Adi Godrej was conferred the ICSIs Lifetime Achievement Award for 'Translating Excellence in Corporate Governance into Reality at a function here.
The awards were instituted by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), which is celebrating its golden jubilee.
The 3rd CSR Excellence Awards went to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, Tata Power Co Ltd and Ambuja Cements Ltd in Emerging, Medium and Large categories respectively.

Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri received honorary membership of Sydney Cricket Ground
Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri received honorary membership of the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) for their contribution to the sport of cricket.
Apart from them, the only other international cricketers to be granted the honorary membership of the SCG are iconic Sachin Tendulkar and Brain Lara of the West Indies.

Namita Gokhale wins Sushila Devi Literature Award
Writer Namita Gokhale has won the Sushila Devi Literature Award for her novel "Things to Leave Behind".
She was awarded in the 'Best Book of Fiction Written by a Woman Author' category at the inaugural edition of Bhopal Literature and Art Festival (BLF) that began here Saturday.
The literary event will see participation by over 70 writers and artists attending the festival.

Nepal Army Chief – The Honorary General Of The Indian Army
President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army on Purna Chandra Thapa, the Chief of the Army Staff of Nepalese Army.
The honor was given to him at a special Investiture Ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
General Thapa assumed the command of the Nepali Army as Chief of Army Staff on September 9, 2018.

'Roma', Lady Gaga Rule 2019 Critics' Choice Awards
With four prizes, Roma was the big winner at the 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, while Lady Gaga took out two awards, including best actress in a tie with Glenn Close.
This year's show was presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, while Taye Diggs hosted.
Netflix drama Roma led the pact, taking out best picture and best foreign language film while Alfonso Cuarón collected best director and best cinematography.
Other multiple winners included Black Panther and Vice (three each) with the latter including two best actor wins for its lead Christian Bale.
Lady Gaga was the center of attention as she snagged best song for “Shallow,” her A Star Is Born duet with Bradley Cooper, and won for best actress

PM Modi receives the first-ever Philip Kotler Presidential Award for his leadership.
Prime Minister NarendraModi received the first-ever Philip Kotler Presidential Award for his "outstanding leadership".
The award committee lauded the leader's "selfless service towards India" along with his "tireless energy".
The Philip Kotler award focuses on three aspects - people, profit and planet.
The award, will hereon, be annually given to the leader of a nation.
The citation further mentioned that under the Prime Minister's leadership, India has been identified as the centre for innovation and Value Added Manufacturing, while referring to Make in India.
Major Aditya Kumar and Rifleman Aurangzeb to get Shaurya Chakra gallantry award
Major Aditya of the army’s 10 Garhwal Rifles had come into the limelight when his unit had fired at a stone-pelting mob in Shopian on January 27 that left three people dead.
The President also conferred Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) to Group Captain Abhishek Sharma, Squadron Leader Vernon Desmond Keane and Sergeant Shashidhar P Prasad.

Detained Chinese lawyer Yu Wensheng wins Franco-German human rights award
Detained Chinese lawyer, Mr Yu Wensheng who is best known for suing the Beijing government over the city’s once chronic pollution, granted a human rights award by the French and German ambassadors to China at an event organised by the German embassy in Beijing.
Yu Wensheng’s wife, Madam Xu Yan, received the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law for 2018, on his behalf.
The awards which consisted of 15 winners were announced in November last year.

Yohei Sasakawa receives Gandhi Peace Prize for 2018
YoheiSasakawa was named to receive Gandhi Peace Prize for 2018,who is the Goodwill Ambassador of the World Health Organization for Leprosy Elimination.
The award is in recognition of his work towards the eradication of the disease in India and across the world.
About Gandhi Peace Prize:
The award was instituted by the Government of India in 1995 during the commemoration of 125th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The title winners would receive a cash prize of Rs.1 crore.
The Indian government had instituted the award in 1995 to honour individuals and institutions for their contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.

India born, Dr. Rattan Lalhonoured with 2019 Japan Prize for his contributions in ''Biological Production, Ecology''
The Japan Prize Foundation announced India born professor Dr. Rattan Lal as the recipient of the 2019 Japan Prize in the field of ''Biological Production, Ecology''.
Each laureate will receive a certificate of recognition and a commemorative gold medal.
A cash award of 50 million Japanese yen (approximately $450,000 USD) will also be given to each prize field.

The Japan Prize is highly competitive: the nomination process ends in February, and, every year from March to November, the Foundation considers the nominations of 15,000 prominent scientists and researchers from around the world.

Chief Minister of Haryana Shri Manohar Lal Khattar announces ''Shaurya Award'' to students
The award is in the name of 71 state police force martyrs who laid down their lives while maintaining law and order and protecting society since the formation of the state in 1966.
Prize money of Rs. 11,000 will be given to students for courageous deeds every year in a village block where the school is located under this award.

MP Anurag Thakur Honoured With Sansad Ratna Award
Himachal Pradesh MP Anurag Thakur has been bestowed with Sansad Ratna Awardfor his distinguished performance as a parliamentarian under Jury Committee Special Award category.
Thakur became the first BJP MP to receive the Jury Committee award.
12 parliamentarians were honored with the SansadRatna award, which was set up in 2010 on the suggestion of ex-President APJ Abdul Kalam.
The SansadRatna Award was set up & launched in 2010 by Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

The Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu presented the 2nd Chhatra Vishwakarma Awards to students and their mentors and Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) Awards to institutions at an event organized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in New Delhi.

Ranjani Murali Wins 'Woman’s Voice Award' At AKLF 2019
US Based Indian poet Ranjani Murali was awarded the “Woman’s Voice Award” at the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF).
The Objective of the award is to recognize and encourage creative writing by women in India.
The Award carried a cash prize of Rs 1 Lakh along with a citation.
RanjaniMurali’s second book “Clearly you are ESL” won the Great Indian Poetry Collectives (GIPCs) Editor’s Choice award. Her first book “Blind Screens” was published in July 2017.

Bharat Ratna CNR Rao Chosen For International Prize For Materials Research
Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research announced that the Centre for Advanced Materials of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) chose Eminent Scientist andBharat Ratna recipient CNR Rao for the first Sheikh Saud International Prize for Materials Research.
The Award containing a plaque, a medal and a Cash Prize of USD 100000 will be presented by Sheikh Saud to Professor CNR Rao.
CNR Rao was awarded the highest Civilian award, Bharat Ratna in 2014 and presently he is working as the Honorary President of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.

Indian expats From UAE Win Prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award
Three Indian expats from the UAE are amongst those who won the prestigious PravasiBharatiyaSamman Award the highest honor conferred on Indian diaspora. President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the award on Girish Pant, Surender Singh Kandhari and Dr. Zulekha Daud and other awardees at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Varanasi.
Girish Pant is a social worker, Surender Singh Kandhari is chairman of the Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Temple and a philanthropist, businessman, Dr. Zulekha is founder and chairperson of Zulekha Healthcare Group.

For the year 2019, 8th Battalion of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) located at Ghaziabad has been selected for the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar for its commendable work in Disaster Management.
The Award recipient will receive a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 51 lakh.

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) received best Miniratna PSU in strategic performance financial category award at an award function held In New Delhi.
Numaligarh Refinery Limited is a mini ratna company in Assam owned by Bharat Petroleum.
It is a joint venture between Bharat Petroleum, Oil India and Government of Assam.
The award was declared at the Sixth PSU awards held at New Delhi. The awards are given out in recognition to the effect of Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) who have played a key role in Country’s growth.
NRL received award in strategic performance under financial category. It is evaluated by a two phase rigorous process by data science agency MT6 Analytics. The performance are measured using Moody’s methodology.

Padma Awards 2018 announced
Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
'Padma Vibhushan' is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and 'Padma Shri' for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at RashtrapatiBhawan usually around March/ April every year.
This year the President of India has approved conferment of 85 Padma Awards including two duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one) as per list below.
The list comprises 3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 73 Padma Shri Awards.
14 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 16 persons from the category of Foreigners/ NRI/ PIO/ OCI and 3 Posthumous awardees.

In sports personalities, former India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and multiple world champion cueist Pankaj Advani have been conferred with the third-highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan.
The 2017 World Weightlifting Champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and former Asian Games gold medallist tennis player SomdevDevvarman have been conferred with the Padma Shri. The awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day every year.

India Bags The Award of Excellence for 'Best in Show' At NYTTS 2019
India received the Award of Excellence for ‘Best in Show’ at the New York Times Travel Show 2019, the largest travel show in North America.
India was honoured during the Closing Bell Ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange.
The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India participated as the ‘Presenting Partner’ in the New York Times Travel Show (NYTTS 2019) organised at Jacob K Javits Centre, New York.
