Noted Malayalam writer M Mukundan selected for 2018 Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literacy prize of the Kerala government.
The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs five lakh and citation, is being given for his overall contributions to the language and literature.
His popular works inlcude ‘Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil’, ‘Kesavante Vilapangal’, ‘Delhi Gadhakal’, ‘Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma’ and ‘Lesli Achante.

CSIR-ICT Scientist S. Venkata Mohan has been selected for Vasvik Award 2018
CSIR - Indian Institute of Chemical Technology principal scientist and Department of Biotechnology Tata Innovation Fellow S. Venkata Mohan has been selected for the prestigious Vasvik Award for 2018.
VASVIK Industrial Research Award is an Indian award, instituted to recognize and promote excellence in industrial research in the areas of science and technology.
The award is given annually to individuals or groups and carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 100,000.

Tamil Nadu's Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple wins UNESCO award. 
The Sri Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu has won UNESCO Asia-Pacific award for cultural heritage conservation programme in the Awards of Merit category.
It is first temple from Tamil Nadu to grab the prestigious honour from the UN body.

Super 30 founder Anand Kumar honoured with Global Education Award in Dubai.
Veteran Mathematician Anand Kumar will be awarded for his contribution to the field of education and illuminating the lives of many talented students.

Namrata Ahuja bags IPI-India Award for excellence in journalism 2018
Namrata Biji Ahuja of The Week magazine has been awarded the IPI (International Press Institute) India Award for excellence in journalism 2018.
She has received this award for her exclusive story on Nagaland underground camps.
 IPI-India Award: cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, a trophy and a citation
IPI India had instituted the award in 2003. It is awarded annually to honour the best work done by an Indian media organisation or journalist working in print, radio, television and internet mediums.
Work done in public interest, safeguarding of freedom of the press and other freedoms like human rights are recognized.

“Mere Pyaare Prime Minister” is the only Asian Film screened at Rome Film Festival.
The Official Selection of the Rome Film Fest presented 3 productions from 3 different continents. From Asia, filmmaker RakeyshOmprakashMehra’s upcoming film “Mere Pyaare Prime Minister” was screened.
The film is produced by BharathiMehra. The film speaks about the social issue of open defecation.
The film focuses on four children living in a Mumbai slum. One of them wants to build a toilet for his single mother and makes an appeal to the Prime Minister.

Argentine fan names rose after LataMangeshkar
A LataMangeshkar fan from Argentina, Santiago Lopez, who is a florist by profession, has named a rose in honour of the veteran playback singer. 
The 89-year-old melody queen, who was “deeply touched” by the gesture, revealed that Lopez, who is Spanish by birth, is learning Sanskrit, Hindi and Yoga.

N Ram chosen for ‘Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award’ by Press Council of India (PCI)
Veteran journalist and the Hindu Group of Publications Chairman N Ram has been chosen for the prestigious Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award, presented by the PCI for his outstanding contribution towards journalism.

SamayGodika Wins Breakthrough Junior Challenge for 2018
SamayGodika, a bengaluru boy has won this year’s Breakthrough Junior Challenge. Godika won a whooping prize money of $400,000 (approx Rs 2.0 crore).
A student of National Public School-Koramangala, Godika, 16, won the prize for his video in life science category that is focused on circadian rhythms, the 24-hour biological processes that can affect simple daily experiences such as waking up for school or jet lag.

Ayodhya Deepotsav 2018 Enters Guinness Book For Lighting Over Three Lakh Diyas on Banks of River Sarayu
The mega Deepotsav 2018 celebrations which began with an aim to set a world record, entered the Guinness Book of Record for lighting as many as 3,01,152 earthen lamps, on the bank of River Sarayu. More than three lakh ‘diyas’ or ‘earthen lamps’ were lit on both sides of the banks of River Sarayu.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanathalong with South Korean First LadyKim Jung-sook who is the chief guest on the occasion, were present during this feat.

Arunima Sinha World's first Indian woman amputee to scale Everest gets honorary doctorate in UK
Arunima Sinha, the Indian mountaineer who became the world's first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest in 2013, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by a prestigious UK university for her inspirational achievements.
Sinha was conferred with the honorary doctorate by the University of Strathclyde at a graduation ceremony in Glasgow. She was honoured in the Barony Hall for her inspirational achievements in mountaineering.
Centre awards Assam Police for citizen services
The Union government has awarded the Assam Police for "good practices" under the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS), an e-governance project.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also awarded Anil Kumar Jha, Special Director General (CID) of the force, for his outstanding contribution in implementing the project.
The award was given for citizen centric service delivery, in which the state police has automated passport verification and Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC) services using the online CCTNS.

Jawahar Lal Sarin conferred with France’s highest civilian honour ‘Knight of the Legion of Honour’.
It was given by French Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler.
 He received the honor due to his outstanding contribution to enhancing Indo-French cultural cooperation and promoting the French language.
 He is currently the president of the  governing body of Alliance Francise.

Indian journalist Swati Chaturvedi wins 2018 London Press Freedom Award for Courage in UK. 
 She received the award at the 1st award ceremony organised by the United Kingdom chapter of Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) or Reporters Without Borders in London.
She is the author of the book ‘I am a Troll: Inside the Secret World of the BJP’s Digital Army’.

Young writer-critic  Dr. Debabhuson Borah announced winner of Munin Barkotoki Literary Award 2018 in Assam.
Dr. Debabhuson Borah  was honoured for his contribution for his book on literary criticism titled ‘Nirbochon’.
The award was announced by the Munin Barkotoki Memorial Trust which aims to encourage writers in Assamese. 
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with a citation and a plaque.

Amnesty International strips Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi of ‘Ambassador of Conscience’ Award
Amnesty International awarded Ambassador of Conscience Award, which is a human rights award, to Aung San Suu Kyi in 2009.
She has been withdrawn from various international honours because of the Rohingya issue that started in August 2017.
Over 7,00,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar’s western border into Bangladesh following Myanmar military’s attack which was done in response to Rohingya insurgent attacks on the security forces.
Myanmar military has been accused of launching a campaign of killings, rape and arson.

Late Dr. Martha Farrell received lifetime achievement award for her contribution in social work
Dr. Martha Farrell was honoured with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 6th Indian Social Work Congress in New Delhi.
She received the award for her contribution in social work.
She was recognized for her lifelong work towards gender equality, women’s empowerment and prevention of sexual harassment at workplace.
In 2014, she published the first Indian book on the subject, “Engendering the Workplace: Gender Discrimination and Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Organizations”.

Rock and Roll singer Elvis Presley among recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom
7 people including Elvis Presley were announced as recipients of Presidential Medal of Freedom, by the White House, United States.
Elvis Presley is awarded the medal posthumously for his contribution to American culture.
Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor of the United States of America.

Lionel Messi wins 6th La Liga Player of the Year award
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was declared La Liga league’s best player of the 2017-18 campaign, by Marca’s football awards for the 2017-18 season. Marca is a Spanish national daily sport newspaper.
Lionel Messi also won the Pichichi Trophy given to the top scorer in La Liga each year.
He also won the Di Stefano trophy, awarded to the best player of the season.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan Presented Lifetime Achievement Award in Delhi
One of the India's greatest sarod masters, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, was presented the 'Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement' at the Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi, for his immense contribution to the “enrichment and promotion of the Indian classical music".
The award was presented to him by former diplomat Lalit Mansingh.
He is popularly known as the “Sarod Samrat”
He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan (in 2001) and is among the tallest Indian classical musicians.

UASG (Universal Acceptance Steering Group) confers Universal Acceptance Thought Leader award to Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje
Vasundhara Raje was honoured with Universal Acceptance Thought Leader award for providing Rajmail email service for citizens of Rajasthan in local script.
The technology for Rajmail was developed by Data XGen Technologies, a Rajasthan based firm.
Vasundhara Raje was also awarded the ‘Chief Minister of the Year’ award in 2018.

Mexico’s highest honour for Indian academic Professor S.P. Ganguly
Professor S.P. Ganguly, a well-known Hispanist headed the Centre for Spanish and Latin American Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, has been awarded the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest civilian honour given to a foreigner by Mexico.
The award was in recognition of his outstanding work in the study and dissemination of the Spanish language and Mexican culture.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) bags Indira Gandhi peace prize 2018 for environment protection
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) was awarded this year’s Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for its pioneering work in the field of environmental education and protection and also for keeping the issue of environmental sustainability at the forefront of national attention and public policy.
The award was announced by an international jury headed by ex-President Pranab Mukherjee.

Chennai Airport Awarded for 100% Grievance Redressal
The Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Commerce & Industry, Suresh Prabhu, and Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Jayant Sinha has launched the upgraded version of AirSewa 2.0 web portal and mobile app in New Delhi.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation launched AirSewa web portal and mobile app in November 2016 to address Air passengers' issues.
Suresh Prabhu and Jayant Sinha also gave away the champion award to Chennai airport which saw 100% timely closure of grievances in one year.

100-Year-old WW-II veteran Retired Lt. Col. William Pollard awarded French Legion of Honor
French government has awarded French Legion of Honor to 100-year-old Retired Col. William Pollard during a ceremony at the Kentucky Capitol.
William Pollard fought in World War II and rescued 14 soldiers from a concrete caisson that was hit by enemy fire.

WCCB wins 2018 Asia Environment Enforcement Awards for combating trans-boundary environmental crime
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has selected Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and its enforcement officer RS Sharath for 2018 Asia Environmental Enforcement Awards.
This is the second time in row that WCCB is awarded by UN Environment.
They were selected under organization and individual categories respectively for their outstanding contributions in combating the trans-boundary environmental crimes.  
The 2018 Awards will be given by UNEP with UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Office on Drugs and Crime, INTERPOL (UNODC), USAID, Freeland Foundation, and Government of Sweden.

Film superstar Amitabh Bachchan receives Sayaji Ratna Award
Film star Amitabh Bachchan awarded the third Sayaji Ratna Award in Laxmi Vilas Palace, Vadodara for his social contribution to pay off the loans of several farmers from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
He had helped 1,398 farmers from Uttar Pradesh and 350 from Maharashtra through his contribution.
The first 2 recipients of the award were Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy and industrialist Ratan Tata.

The prestigious International James Dyson award 2018 was won by Nicolas Orellana of Chile and Yaseen Noorani from Kenya for their innovative design ‘Urban wind turbine’ called O-Wind Turbine.
It would help cities to harness energy to produce electricity and was inspired from NASA’s Mars Tumbleweed Rover.
It is a sphere shaped object with vents that spins and converts the power of the wind into electricity.
This can either be used as a direct source of power or it can be fed into the electricity grid.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education won silver in the International Green Apple Award for evironmental best practice 2018 at a ceremony held at the Houses of Parliament in London.
The award was received by Derrick I. Joshua, Assistant Director, Environment Sustainability, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).
Green Manipal, the award winning project of MAHE was selected among the 800 global nominations which competed to pick the greenest individuals, companies, councils and communities.
MAHE’s winning paper will be published in the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice called The Green Book.

Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro, has won Forbes India Leadership Awards 2018, Lifetime Achievement.
Wipro is India’s fourth-biggest software services company by revenue and Ajim Premji is the second richest Indian.
The Forbes India Leadership Awards, India's most prestigious honour for the top executives, was held in Mumbai.

IFFI nominates 12 movies for ICFT UNESCO Gandhi Medal
The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has nominated 12 movies for this year’s International Council for Film, Television and Audio-visual Communication (ICFT) UNESCO Gandhi Medal.
Of these 12 films, two are from India and the rest are foreign movies.
The two Indian movies competing for the honour are Tamil film ‘Baaram’ and Ladakhi movie ‘Walking with the Wind’.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu presented Sri Sathya Sai Award For Human Excellence - 2018
The Vice President of India Shri M Venkaiah Naidu, presented the 3rd Sri Sathya Sai Award for Human Excellence that recognizes individuals, who are doing tremendous work to uplift the society in various parts of the world, at a gathering in the event World Youth Meet held in Bangalore.
The awards are presented under seven categories – health, education, women and child welfare, environment, music and fine arts, unity of religion and sports.
The award is instituted by Prashanthi Balamandira Trust and the jury consisted of 14 eminent personalities from across various fields.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), first PSU, won CII-Exim Bank Business Award in Bengaluru
Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) won the CII-Exim Bank Business Excellence Award, for being a role-model organization, at the Quality Summit  held in Bengaluru organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
The company’s Bengaluru complex is the first state-run undertaking to be recognized as a role-model organization by the CII.
3 other BEL units at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Chennai in Tamil Nadu and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh received Platinum recognition for business excellence.

14 Scientist awarded with Swarnajayanti Fellowships 2017-18 award: Dept. of Science and Technology (DST)
14 scientists have been selected for the prestigious Swarnajayanti fellowship award instituted by the Department of Science and Technology, for the year 2017-18.
The awards were given in the areas of:
Chemical Sciences - Sripada S.V. Rama Sastry, Sebastian C Peter
Physical Sciences - K.G. Arun, G.V. Pavan Kumar
Life Sciences - Girdhari Lal, Chandrima Das, Arun Kumar Shukla
Engineering Sciences - Mayank Vatsa, Yogesh Singh Chauhan , Ashish Kumar Sen
Earth & Atmospheric Sciences - Ramananda Chakrabarti, Punyasloke Bhadury
Mathematical Sciences - Saket Saurabh , Parthanil Roy
The award includes a fellowship of Rs.25,000/- per month for five years.

Indian Social Entrepreneur Sanjay Kumar won the first UN Geospatial Ambassador Award
Sanjay Kumar, Founder and CEO of Geospatial Media & Communications, was conferred the ‘Global Geospatial Industry Ambassador’ Award at the United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress held at Deqing city in China.
The Theme of the Congress is “The Geospatial Way to a Better World”.
This was given by the UN-GGIM (United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management).

49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2018 concluded in Goa: Donbass Wins The Golden Peacock
The Festival opened with World Premiere of ‘The Aspern Papers’.
The Closing film of IFFI 2018 was World Premier of ‘Sealed Lips’.
Israel was the country of focus for the 49th edition of IFFI.
Jharkhand was selected as the State of Focus.
IFFI had 7 films commemorating his career including documentary on Bergman titled “Bergman Island” directed by Marie Nyrerod.
Donbass directed by Sergei Loznitsa has won the coveted Golden Peacock Award.
The Golden Peacock Award carries a cash prize of Rs 4 million (Rs 40 lakhs) to be shared equally between the Producer and the Director, Trophy and the citation.

Parijat Industries wins Sarvashrestha Suraksha Puraskar 2017
Leading Indian agrochemical company, Parijat Industries (India) Pvt Ltd, has recently been conferred with the top level National Safety Awards, “Sarvashrestha Suraksha Puraskar” gold award for the year 2017.
Parijat Industries has received this award for its exemplary monitoring and implementation of effective safety systems and procedures during the assessment year.

Azim Premji Conferred Highest French Civilian Honour
IT czar and philanthropist Azim Premji was bestowed with the highest French civilian distinction Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour).
 Premji, who is the chairman of Bengaluru-headquartered IT major Wipro, received the distinction from the Ambassador of France to India Alexandre Ziegler in Bengaluru.
The award was bestowed on Azim Premji for his outstanding contribution to developing the information technology industry in India, his economic outreach in France, and his laudable contribution to society as a philanthropist through the Azim Premji Foundation and Azim Premji University.

Indian Navy pilots Commander Vijay Varma and Captain P. Rajkumar awarded ‘Asian of the Year’ for Kerala floods rescue
The award was jointly given to four entities, including the two Indians, by Singapore newspaper The Strait Times for their “death-defying rescue flying” during the Kerala floods and courageous conduct in the face of natural calamity.
The late Singaporean para-glider Ng Kok Choong, along with Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) and Mercy Relief, a Singapore NGO were the other three awardees.
Nandita Das, Nawazuddin Siddiqui Awarded at 12th Asia Pacific Screen Awards for 'Manto'
Asia Pacific Screen Award (APSA) 2018 for Best Performance by an actor (Male) went to Nawazuddin Siddiqui for Manto.
Nandita Das, director of the movie herself received the prestigious International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) Award for achievement in film in the Asia Pacific region.
The 12th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) were given out at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) in Brisbane, Australia.
The awards ceremony was hosted by Australian actress Sofie Formica and New Zealand actor Cliff Curtis.
