December 30

An assessment of the country's forest resources, was released by Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar. The biennial report by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2019,showed in the last 2 years the forest and tree cover in India has risen by 5,188 square kilometers. Karnataka growing the maximum cover of 1,025 sq km followed by Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. There has been an increase of 3,976 sq. km (0.56 per cent) of forest cover and 1,212 sq. km (1.29 per cent) of tree cover, compared to the 2017 report.

According to a report released by Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) a UK based company, India will be the world’s fourth largest economy in place of Germany by 2026. The report also stated that by 2034, India will overtake Japan to become third largest economy in the world.

A report on Global Tobacco use trends was released by the World Health Organization. Globally the number of tobacco users has declined by 60 million people. In 2000, the overall tobacco users were 1.397 billion and it has come down to 1.337 billion in 2018.

The World Economic Forum in its report put India in 112th  rank in terms of gender gap. The report said that India ranked in last five places in terms of survival and economic participation.

The annual HDI 2019 report ranked India at the 129th position, one rank above last year's ranking out of 189 countries.

A study commissioned by 14 seafaring nations predicts that unchecked climate change could devastate fishery industries and by 2050. Another study found that many birds are shrinking in size while their wingspans are increasing as the climate warms. Researchers from the University of Michigan in the US analyzed a dataset of 70,000 North American migratory birds from 52 species that died when they collided with buildings in Chicago, US. They found that, body size decreased in all 52 species with statistically significant declines.

According to a survey by Euro Monitor International The National Capital has been witnessing soaring popularity and wellness tourism across the world. Delhi currently ranks 11th in the list of world’s tops 100 destinations and is to gain 8th rank in 2019. The ranking was released by the organization under the title “Top 100 city destination ranking”.
A Britain-based tech research firm Comparitech, a new report puts, India as the fifth worst country after China, Malaysia, Pakistan and United States in terms of extensive and invasive use of biometric data. The study was conducted based on- 50 different countries that were anlaysed.
In the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Business-to-Consumer (B2C) E-commerce Index 2019 India ranked 73rd. The ranking was conducted for 152 countries. The Netherlands topped the index for the second consecutive year. The survey was conducted among 152 countries.

The Environmental think tank Germanwatch found Japan to be the most vulnerable country to climate change, followed by Philippines, Germany, Madagascar and India. The Global Climate Risk Index 2020, published by environmental think tank Germanwatch which assessed 181 countries and quantified impacts of climate change through economic losses, losses to GDP.
