         Look around you. You see buildings and roads; you drink clean water and breathe clean air. Civil engineers, together with other disciplines, make these aspects of everyday life possible! Be a part of it! As a civil engineer, find creative solutions to problems while working on a wide range of local, regional, and/or global projects. Apply cutting edge math, science, and technology to make a difference in the world.

          Find a civil engineering career path that best suits you. From ancient times people devoted great efforts to constructing various facilities and structures to make their living conditions safer and more effictive. The ractice kept improving their skill during a tremendously long period of time, and the techniques they learned were applied to numerous projects in other regions of ancient civilizations.

    Some of the man made great structures
    1. Giza pyramid was constructed in about 2600 B.C with 2 to 3 million stone blocks weigh an average of over 1.5 tonnes each. The height and the base length of he pyramid are 146.6 m and 230 m respectively. This magnificent construction was made possible only with the full use of astronomical and other survey technology.

    2. The Great wall of China is another spectacular heritage site. The total length of the wall is about 2250 km and the construction project was initiated by Shih-hung-ti, the first emperor of China in 214 B.C. by connecting the walls that existed at that time. The main purpose of this big wall construction was to protect the state.

    3. There are many other heritage sites that can be mentioned, such as the Parthenon in Greece, constructed in 438 B.C; The Roman road built about 310 B.C; The Colosseum in Rome constructed in 80 A.D; and the Great canal in China completed in 610 A.D connecting several big rivers such as Yellow River and the Yangtze River.

           Civil Engineering is considered as one of the oldest engineering disciplines, involves planning, designing and executing structural works. The profession deals with a wide variety of engineering tasks including designing, supervision and construction activities of public works like roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airports, dams, water works, sewage systems, ports etc. and offers a multitude of challenging career opportunities. Civil Engineers can find job in Government departments, private and public sector industries, research and teaching institutions etc.
            There are excellent job opportunities in civil engineering both in public and private sectors. The government departments like public health, irrigation or public works offer ample job opportunities to civil engineering graduates. However, the probability of finding jobs in private sector is more as compared to government sector. A fresh graduate of civil engineering one can also look for jobs in road projects, building work, consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories or housing societies. According to experts, there is a high demand for experienced civil engineers in developed countries. Hundreds of civil engineers migrate from India to Canada, Australia and other countries for better career prospects. According to an estimate, over 50,000 new jobs in the civil engineering sector are coming up every year across the country in the private sector. The Central Government has announced to invest over Rs 50,000 crore in the infrastructure sector in the next few years.
           After completion of B.Tech in civil engineering one can choose higher studies either in India and Abroad.
    * In India, all IITs, NITs and other major universities are offering the following specializations to pursue M.Tech programs. One should qualify the GATE exam to join in any M.Tech program.
    * In abroad, M.S programs are offered by many prestigious institutions/universities in all specializations of civil engineering. One should have GRE/TOEFL score to pursue admission.
    The Major Specializations
    * Structural
    * Water resources
    * Environmental
    * Construction
    * Transportation
    * Geo-technical engineering etc.
    * After completion of B.Tech in civil engineering, one can choose MBA which is offered by IIMs and other Government and Private universities. One should qualify CAT exam to pursue MBA.
           After completion of Post graduation (M.Tech / M.E / M.S ) engineering, one can do Ph.D. in various branches of civil engineering.
    After completion of B.Tech in civil engineering, one is eligible to write UPSC examination (IES) which provides an opportunity to join central government services such as Telecom, Railways, Defense, and PWD etc., State Government also offers jobs in civil engineering through APPSE examination in the departments of Irrigation&Cad, R&B, Panchayat raj, Rural water supply, Ground water department etc., Other State and Central Government firms like NTPC, JINDAL, BHEL, AP Transo, AP Genco, ONGC, SAIL are offering job opportunities by conducting their individual tests every year.
           In construction, civil engineers may work for a firm/company to create the built environment, transforming engineering and architectural design drawings from paper to reality. They are involved in projects of every size and complexity from airports, bridges, and tunnels to local roads and the water and wastewater lines to our homes. The core civil engineering curriculum provides an excellent foundation for the critical thinking necessary to work in the construction sector. Additional classes in project management, safety, scheduling, estimating, and risk management are recommended. As construction is hands on, early field experience is essential to building your career. Civil engineers in the construction sector are instrumental in building and maintaining the world we live in.
    Major construction companies in India

               Bridge and Roof
                         L & T

           Gammon India
     Hindustan Construction Company

           In addition to the above construction companies, there are various consultancy companies are also offering wide range of jobs in civil engineering

           Civil engineering graduates are most suitable to become an entrepreneur. After sufficient experience in a particular field of civil engineering, one can start their own firm and become entrepreneur.
