It is the branch of engineering that concerns the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, knowledge, equipment, energy, material and process. They determine the most effective ways to use the basic factors of production, people, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or to provide a service.
They are the bridge between management goals and operational performance. They are more concerned with increasing productivity through the management of people, methods of business organization, and technology than are engineers in other specialties, who generally work more with products or processes. They also design or improve systems for the physical distribution of goods and services. Industrial engineers determine which plant location has the best combination of raw materials availability, transportation facilities, and costs.
They use computers for simulations and to control various activities and devices, such as assembly lines and robots. They also develop wage and salary administration systems and job evaluation programs. Many industrial engineers move into management positions because the work is closely related. Industrial engineering draws upon the principles and methods of engineering analysis and synthesis. It eliminates waste of time, money, materials, energy and other resources. Industrial Engineering is also known as Operations management, Production Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Manufacturing Systems Engineering depending on the viewpoint or motives of the user. In healthcare Industrial Engineers are more commonly known as Management Engineers or Health Systems Engineers.
Industrial Engineer can get jobs in almost all types of industries. Self employment opportunities are also available as consultants or specialists in methods and work operation usually after suitable years of industrial experience. Because of the broad-based nature of the course, production and industrial engineers can work with all types of engineering and manufacturing industries in the private and public sectors. Opportunities exist in industrial and other sectors - both in public and private - as business systems analyst or business process engineer; production; process, assets or manufacture engineer; quality control manager; health and safety manager; human resource manager; logistics manager or facilities engineer; project manager; plant supervisor; scheduling and planning manager; operations manager and management consultant. Industrial engineers work in a variety of research labs and industries including manufacturing, communications, transportations, banking, pharmaceuticals, finance, travel, semiconductor, e-business, sports, health and information technology
