The Mechanical Engineering is an unfading oldest branch in the field of engineering. It opens opportunities throughout the world. Industrial sectors like aviation, shipping, automobiles, thermal, gas, nuclear power plants, steel plants, cement plants, refrigeration and air conditioning etc., are very much in need of mechanical engineers for designing, analyzing, developing, testing, manufacturing, erection, operation, maintenance and quality control.

Finally, where production/manufacturing takes place, there is inevitably a need of mechanical engineer. Most of the Indian universities are offering Graduate and Post Graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering and its allied branches.
In the current scenario almost all industries are going for renovation through automation of their plants. In this situation, the role of mechanical engineer or the engineers of its allied branches like automobiles, industrial production, metallurgy, material science, aerospace engineering etc., has become uniquely important.
A mechanical engineer always needs to improve professional skills by researching and updating the latest technologies to meet the challenges in career opportunities. This is possible by joining the courses like CAD/CAM/CAE offered by government or private institutions. This can also be enlightened by reading books, national and international journals and magazines. Most of the information related to this is available in Internet.
A Mechanical Engineer always should be in touch with components, machinery and equipment etc., and acquainted with terminology to face interviews.

    What is there to study

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines and found in virtually any manufacturing industry. It is a discipline of engineering that applies the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems.

It is the branch of engineering that involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. It finds application in all fields of technology. It is one of the primitive branches of Engineering which have remained always in demand and continue to be in the future. This is why Mechanical trade is called as an Evergreen Branch. Applications of mechanical engineering are found in the records of many ancient and medieval societies throughout the globe. Their work criteria changes according to the type and domain of the company they are working with. As the Industrial sector has drastically risen in pace, the need for more mechanical engineers has increased exponentially. Every manufacturing and production industry needs mechanical engineers to carry out jobs efficiently and flawlessly for their companies.
Mechanical Engineers have to study a whole lot of physics, Engineering drawing, machine drawing and many more concepts such as Statics, Dynamics, Kinematics, Strength of Materials, Materials Science, Theory of Machines, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Manufacturing, Machine Design, Electrical Circuits, Laboratory Methods, Vibrations, Engineering Economics, Metallurgy, Manufacturing Process, Computer Aided Design/ Drafting (CAD), Automobile Engineering, Industrial Automation and Robotics.

    Career Scope and Placement Prospects

It has a tremendous scope in automobile engineering, cement industry, steel, power sector, Hydraulics, Manufacturing plants, Drilling and mining Industry, Petroleum, Aeronautical, Biotechnology and many more. The field has continually evolved to incorporate advancements in technology, and mechanical engineers today are pursuing developments in such fields as composites, mechatronics, and nanotechnology. Mechanical engineering overlaps with aerospace engineering, metallurgical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, petroleum engineering, manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, and other engineering disciplines to varying amounts. Mechanical engineers also work in the field of Biomedical engineering, specifically with biomechanics, transport phenomena, bio-mechatronics, bio-nanotechnology and modeling of biological systems, like soft tissue mechanics.
The salaries vary from company to company and government to private. However the salary depends upon the capabilities and work expertise of the candidate. The starting salary varies from Rs. 10,000/- to Rs. 15,000/- per month which depend upon nature of the work.
